Johnson & Johnson MedTech Digital (JJMT) is recruiting for a Principal Applied Scientist within the applied sciences and computer vision team of MedTech Digital. JJMT Digital is passionate about crafting the future of digital surgery by developing software products and solutions for hospitals, clinicians, and patients. These products will deliver a comprehensive digital surgery experience for J&J Med Tech customers and their patients from pre-operative care through post-operative support.

The preferred location is Santa Clara, CA, with remote work considered on a case-by-case basis

We are seeking an experienced Principal Applied Scientist to lead several key areas of model development and deployment of state-of-the-art computer vision and AI models for surgical AI systems. These systems use sophisticated real-time machine learning algorithms and make information accessible and actionable to both clinicians and patients. This is an opportunity to work with a cross-functional high-value team of applied scientists, software engineers, and ML engineers who will push the boundaries of AI to support surgical outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop, deploy and manage state of the art ML Models in production (classic ML, DNNs, and Large Language Models/GenAI).
  • Strong experience in developing and deploying vision-based models in production with both batch and real-time processing.
  • Mentor and lead junior team members, successful team via coaching, mentoring and providing technical guidance.
  • Work closely with engineering and platform team to implement and adopt best MLOPS practices and platform tooling
  • Strike a right balance between applied research and product-focused core features and deliver continuous value through ML to end customers. Develop ML/AI Strategy


Qualifications

Qualifications

  • M.S., or PhD. in Statistics, Computer Science, Math, Machine Learning, Operations Research, Physics, Economics, or another quantitative field.
  • 10+ years of industry experience developing machine learning models with business impact, and shipping ML solutions to production.
  • 5+ years of experience as a lead or principal engineer, preferable in MedTech.
  • 3-5 years of experience applying deep learning, language, speech, or vision models
  • Ability to crosscut and bridge domain expertise and machine learning approach to solve complex problems.
  • Familiarity with Distributed Systems and Infrastructure (using a Cloud provider such as AWS/GCP or Azure) is a great advantage
  • Up to 15% travel required, in the US and internationally.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $137,000 to $235,750.

The anticipated base pay range for this position is $168,000 to $271,400. (California Bay Area)

  • The Company maintains highly competitive, performance-based compensation programs. Under current guidelines, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus in accordance with the terms of the applicable plan. The annual performance bonus is a cash bonus intended to provide an incentive to achieve annual targeted results by rewarding for individual and the corporation's performance over a calendar/performance year. Bonuses are awarded at the Company's discretion on an individual basis.

This position is eligible to participate in the Company's long-term incentive program.

Employees are eligible for the following time off benefits:

Vacation - up to 120 hours per calendar year

Sick time - up to 40 hours per calendar year; for employees who reside in the State of Washington - up to 56 hours per calendar year

Holiday pay, including Floating Holidays - up to 13 days per calendar year of Work, Personal and Family Time - up to 40 hours per calendar year
