The Lead Discovery & Mechanistic Pharmacology team is a critical part of the Therapeutics Discovery (TD) organization in Johnson & Johnson Innovative Medicine and is committed to the delivery of high-quality chemical leads needed for the generation of small molecule clinical compounds in all five J&J Therapeutic Area (TA) discovery teams. This mission requires deep cross-disciplinary scientific expertise including chemistry, cellular and molecular pharmacology, enzymology, and screening technologies, coupled with an ability to work collaboratively with internal and external partners.
Building on a strong legacy of success, we are currently seeking an outstanding individual to join our team as an Experienced Scientist in the Enzymology group. This position will report to a senior member of the Lead Discovery & Mechanistic Pharmacology (LD&MP) Enzymology team.
Key Responsibilities:
- This position is 90% lab-based with a requirement for on-site work.
- Provide enzymology & protein biochemistry support and subject matter expertise to internal program teams.
- Characterize complex target proteins and enzymes, their substrates, and reaction mechanisms to support hit identification and validation, and influence drug discovery program teams.
- Design, develop, and implement novel biochemical assays to drive small molecule lead identification through candidate declaration.
- Develop, execute, and triage high-throughput screening campaigns and present results to drug discovery matrix teams.
- Conduct mechanistic studies on small molecule enzyme modulators, including mode of inhibition analysis.
- Differentiate biochemical and cellular mechanisms of action of hit molecules to guide SAR and structural approaches to lead optimization.
Qualifications
Education:
- Minimum of a BS Degree with a minimum of 2 years of experience in Enzymology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, and/or Pharmacology. MS Degree is preferred.
Experience and Skills:
Required:
- Subject area proficiency in key areas including biochemical assay development, enzyme characterization, mechanism-of-inhibition studies, steady-state kinetics, and protein biochemistry is required.
- Strong capabilities to collaborate with scientists in various scientific fields is required.
- Ability to work independently and take on responsibility to drive key program deliverables.
- Exceptional written and oral communication skills is required.
Preferred:
- Strong record of publications is highly preferred.
- Basic familiarity with biophysical techniques and their applications (SPR, MST, ThermoFluor) is preferred.
- Experience/Knowledge in Oncology, Immunology, Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases, or Neuroscience areas is preferred.
- Familiarity with large dataset analytics tools (GeneData Screener, Spotfire, etc.) is preferred.
