The Director of Specialty Technologies for the Instruments and Accessories group of the Ottava platform is pivotal in overseeing and enhancing the performance of product engineering teams dedicated to developing key technologies and integrating subsystems for instrument products. This role demands leadership in staff development, effective collaboration with cross-functional stakeholders, and ensuring alignment with product development objectives. The Director is key to the technical delivery of instrument products to the Ottava program while exhibiting standout performance within a matrix organization, strong talent development, and technical proficiency.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Develop a strong cadence of highly complex products in a heavily regulated environment and in close collaboration with marketing, supply chain, regulatory, quality, and clinical.
  • Lead a diverse and sizeable team of engineers, ensuring a results-focused approach.
  • Shape the strategic direction and operational priorities for Manufacturing Development.
  • Connect with team members and stakeholders to foster collaboration and aligned objectives.
  • Empower product realization through Program Management Office-driven efforts.
  • Build and maintain partnerships within the R&D group, ensuring alignment across subsystem functions such as Product Design, Enabling Technologies, Systems Engineering, and Controls.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally within the Ottava business, particularly with Supply Chain, Quality, and Finances.
  • Engage with counterparts across the Johnson & Johnson network, specifically collaborating with the base Ethicon business.
  • Demonstrate effective leadership and influence within a matrix organizational structure, empowering teams to realize product goals across functional boundaries.
  • Exhibit impactful communication skills, facilitating effective program management support, including stakeholder management, budget tracking, schedule management, and program risk management.
  • Successfully lead teams through product development cycle, ensuring projects are executed properly and achieve market success.
  • Manage subassembly integration function, focusing on requirements gathering, risk analysis, tolerance budgeting, and transfer functions.
  • Oversee mechanical engineering management involving the following specialty technologies: Highly Articulated Tools, Stapling, Advanced Bipolar Energy, and Harmonic.
  • Ensure design control through predictive design and adherence to design for six sigma principles.
  • Create and lead a world-class team, a culture of inclusion and innovation, develop a diverse pipeline of successful leaders.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or similar Engineering field with a minimum of 10 years of relevant experience. Advanced degree with at least 8 years of experience preferred.

Qualifications:

Required Experience and Skills:

  • 10+ years of experience developing and delivering highly complex products in heavily regulated environments.
  • 5+ years of people management experience.
  • 5+ years of technical leadership of multi-disciplinary R&D and cross-functional teams.
  • Demonstrated maturity and senior leadership experience within a matrix organization.
  • Demonstrated expertise in design control, risk management, and regulatory compliance across industries such as medical devices, automotive, aerospace, and oil and gas.
  • Track record of successfully bringing products from concept to market on schedule and within budget.
  • Hands-on involvement with solid judgment and decision-making skills.
  • Strong project management and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven track record of success in managing and developing others; ability to acquire and develop a diverse talent pipeline for the future.
  • Strong people management and organizational development skills; agility in leading through change and conflict resolution.
  • The ability to travel up to 10% of the time.

Preferred:

Desired Experience and Skills:

  • Experience with high-volume disposable products.
  • Prior MedTech and/or Robotics experiences.

The anticipated base pay for this role is $160,000.00 to $276,000.00
