JOB SUMMARY
Under limited supervision, creates intricate tools, jigs, fixtures, punches, molds, gauges, and dies with precise tolerances. Works from drawings, sketches, models, or instructions. Plans work efficiently, selecting the most economical methods and appropriate machines. May delegate machining tasks to machinists and create sketches for personal or team use in manufacturing subassemblies.
May assist the Supervisor in scheduling work and provide guidance to staff, acting as a group leader when required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Constructs and repairs machine shop tools, gauges, fixtures, jigs, and dies used within the company.
- Performs a range of tasks, from standard tool room operations to precision work requiring extremely close tolerances.
- Plans construction procedures and selects appropriate materials.
- Accounts for shrinkage during heat treating and metal flow in dies.
- Analyzes blueprints, sketches, models, and specifications to design and assemble metalworking dies, molds, and machine tool fixtures.
- Utilizes various machinist hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Computes dimensions and determines machining requirements and material needs.
- Executes precision work with exacting tolerances and dimensions.
- Recommends design modifications or material substitutions to address fabrication challenges.
- Resolves issues related to materials, work-holding arrangements, machine settings, fabrication methods, and production processes.
- Monitors and verifies quality using statistical process control or other methods.
- May provide guidance to junior toolmakers.
- Supports all company safety and quality programs.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge Requirements
- Technical high school diploma (Electrical, Mechanical, Automation or related field).
- Experience with CNC machines - highly preferred
- Ability to read and write in English, including interpreting safety rules, operating instructions, procedure manuals, and blueprints.
- Proficiency in basic mathematics and the ability to interpret and execute work instructions.
