Job Description
Primary Function of Position
The Senior/Staff Electromechanical Engineer, Advanced Energy, is responsible for the technical development of advanced energy products at Intuitive. Their focus will be on the mechanical design of advanced energy catheters and instruments, contributing to the exploration of novel system concepts for new applications of surgical robotics. They will be a responsible member of the Design Engineering team supporting innovative technology development and commercialization. They will have both the technical depth to resolve complex mechanical, electrical, material, design, and manufacturing issues as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary team to troubleshoot and root cause higher level system issues. They must have strong technical depth in relevant areas and have a track record of successful product development efforts. Using their subject matter expertise, exceptional communication skills and cross-functional collaboration, they will investigate and develop advanced energy applications for novel clinical applications across our robotic surgical systems.
They must excel in a high-energy, focused, small-team environment, and have a commitment to high quality prototypes and concepts. A strong sense of shared responsibility and shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.
Essential Job Duties
- Work in a small, cross-functional project team to design, develop and verify new concepts for smart advanced energy instruments and other flexible electromechanical instruments
- Develop, implement, test and document new solutions, processes, and designs according to corporate standards and departmental operating procedures covering proof of concept, design development, pre-clinical validation, and verification activities.
- Design and develop equipment, tools, fixturing to aid in testing and/or prototyping of advanced energy catheters and associated instruments
- Perform tests, critically analyze results, and make design changes or recommendations to design
- Investigate and determine root cause of emerging design, manufacturing, or material defects
- Observe and support pre-clinical (ex-vivo, in-vivo) and clinical cases and participate in interviews with clinical experts to inform designs
- Create Design History File documentation as required by the company’s quality system and applicable regulations (FDA, MDR, etc)
- Establish individual goals consistent with overall project goals
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- Typical min. of 8-12 years of relevant experience, 6-8 years with a masters, or 5 years with PhD
- Minimum of 5yrs of electromechanical design and 2yrs of medical device development experience
- Demonstrated ability to work in cross-functional research and development teams
- Experience with FDA QSR 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, ISO 14971 and other related external standards
- Proficiency using CAD to design and document mechanisms; SolidWorks preferred. Experience with GD&T and other related ASME/ISO drafting standards
- Experience with all phases of the product development lifecycle; including but not limited to defining the solution space, proof-of-concept, design development, optimization, verification, and design transfer.
- Experience in design and specification of cable assemblies, electrical connectors, sensors, and electronic assemblies
- Experience in design and implementation of embedded development kits and custom electromechanical test equipment to support R&D testing and development
- High autonomy and ability to work independently under limited supervision to determine and develop approach to solutions.
- Solid skills in Python, Matlab, C++ and/or other SW tools for design/debugging.
- Ability to communicate effectively (written, oral) across all levels and organizations
Required Education and Training
- Minimum education: BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related engineering or scientific discipline, or equivalent work experience
Preferred Skills and Experience
- Knowledge IEC 60601-1 preferred
- Experience with flexible circuit development and sensor integration a strong plus
- Knowledge of component manufacturing processes especially as it relates to catheter/instrument development tools, equipment, and fabrication/assembly processes preferred
- Experience with plastics, plastics molding, extrusions, testing, process equipment, adhesives, and/or disposable medical products are a strong plus
- Machining & high volume injection molding experience a plus
Working Conditions
- Must be available to work full-time and commute/relocate to Sunnyvale, CA
- Up to 10% travel. Some international travel may be required.

It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
