Job Description
Primary Function of Position
Intuitive Surgical’s product portfolio includes the da Vinci SimNow Simulator for use in the training of the da Vinci surgical systems. The da Vinci is used in minimally-invasive surgical applications. Virtual reality (VR) simulation plays an important role in the improvement of surgeon technical skills of robot- assisted surgery (RAS). The Simulation Learning Engineer position offers an opportunity for a candidate with strong interest in user technical skills learning, training, assessment and practice. The candidate will be involved in the design, development, validation and analysis of Intuitive’s advanced technology learning solutions. This person will work closely with clinical and product education experts, human factors engineers/researchers, surgeons, software engineers, clinical engineers, interaction designers, and trainers to make sure the products achieve their learning objectives
Essential Job Duties
- Work under the guidance of the Sr Manager – Simulation Product Development
- Background research on how novices acquire new technical skills. This includes being up to date on research publications.
- Background research on how increasing engagement and immersiveness in serious games design can assist users in meeting their learning objectives.
- Acquire hands-on experience on surgical robotics, simulators, video games, technical tasks, etc.
- Work closely with clinical and product education managers, clinical engineers, surgeons, human factors engineers and trainers to develop content design documents that detail the learning objectives, and exercise requirements for simulation exercises.
- Work closely with the product development engineers to design simulation exercises that meet the design document learning objectives.
- Work closely with human factors researchers to validate the scoring and feedback of the exercises.
- Work closely with human factors researchers and interaction/UX designers to ensure that the learning experience meets the learning objectives.
- Work closely with interaction designers so that the user interfaces, real-time feedback, and scoring and metrics output meets the learning objectives
Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience
- This is a unique, multi-disciplinary role. Candidate is passionate about wanting to learn on the job and leverage a multitude of skillsets and work closely w/many teams.
- Strong working knowledge of user research and user study design.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Hands-on experience in self-learning of technical skills would be very beneficial.
- Ability to learn and work independently
- Ability to understand complex systems from high level to low level components
- Ability to work with and across various groups and levels of management within the organization, including other engineering groups, trainers, clinical engineering, and product education management. Excellent collaboration skills.
- Ability to synthesize inputs from multiple stakeholders to plan project timelines and resources.
Required Education and Training
- Minimum education: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Factors, Human-Computer Interaction, Kinesiology, Psychology, Education or related fields
- An alternative path is a Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field and have a minimum of 2-5 years industry experience in medical devices development, technical skills training, clinical and product education, user research, or similar.

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications.
