Job Description

Primary Function of Position:
 

Provide overall leadership for the production team responsible for manufacturing and used in robotic assisted surgical equipment. Manage, develop and motivate the team to achieve given team performance goals within a sophisticated manufacturing work environment. The goals will include quality, efficiency, on-time delivery, FPY and document accuracy (GDP). Goals are set in each of these areas for each quarter and overall team performance is measured against them.

 

Roles and Responsibilities:
 

  • Support the Mission, Vision and Shared Values of Intuitive Surgical.
  • Hire, train, develop, and motivate production personnel with app. 100 employees to follow procedures, meet high quality standards, production schedules, and productivity requirements
  • Establish and develop a highly capable team of direct labor to manufacture complex opto-electro-mechanical systems with a goal of zero defects.
  • Establish quarterly departmental goals and develop programs to achieve them
  • Provide production personnel with expectations and performance feedback quarterly
  • Write and conduct formal annual performance reviews for production personnel
  • Understand, train personnel, and enforce strict adherence to the applicable DOPs and SOPs of the Quality System
  • Develop and manage department budget and allocate resources appropriately to achieve departmental objectives
  • Address, analyze and drive the resolution of line issues as they arise (including technical-related issues)
  • Document and report any variances, problems, issues, or concerns
  • Plan, supervise, drive improvement, and report production performance including output, yields, root cause failures, efficiencies, and trends
  • Drive improvements in safety, production, quality, cost, and delivery as applicable
  • Double check Manufacturing Process Instructions to ensure that MPIs are accurate and complete
  • Work closely with Engineering to resolve production issues and actively participant in quality improvement initiatives.
  • Learn and enforce company safety policies and practices
  • Lead or support various Lean Manufacturing initiatives that involve a Mfg. based team.
  • Support sub-assembly or process outsourcing initiatives
  • Evaluate designs for manufacturability (with respect to tooling and assembly methods). Provide suggested change proposals, or tooling concepts during early design process phase.
  • Review/approve ECOs to determine impact on manufacturing.
  • Review and disposition discrepant material. Implement corrective actions to prevent recurrences.
  • Work effectively with other departments and Intuitive sites to ensure that the production area has all necessary inputs in order to achieve the desired production outputs
  • Report to senior management on the status of production metrics and/or associated supply chain metrics
  • Maintain compliance within the department to all applicable laws and regulatory requirements (e.g. safety, environment)

 

    Qualifications

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:
     

    • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanics/mechatronics/production/engineering or similar with 10+ years of experience leading in-house manufacturing teams
    • Prior experience in the medical device industry is preferred.
    • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others
    • A driven leader, who is organized, a problem solver, a good team person who can motivate their staff and delegate to their team leaders who will then delegate to the wider team
    • Proven experience and track record regarding process improvement of complex manufacturing systems
    • Attention to detail with focus on quality
    • Previous experience with ISO 9001, ISO 13485, or similar QMS a plus
    • Very good communication and documentation skills in German and English
    • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees, managers, or engineers.
    • Fiber optic and /or medical experience preferred
    • Inductive soldering/laser welding/laser marking and gluing experience a plus
