Introduction

IBM has a world class Hardware Compliance engineering team located in Rochester MN that supports product testing from nearly every IBM hardware product. Hardware Compliance has responsibility for assuring that IBM's products are designed to comply with in every country IBM does business with. Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) is adherence to FCC regulations. Product Safety is conformance to Hazard Based Standards supported by underwriters such as UL. Energy Efficiency is conformance to various energy regulations such as U.S. Energy Star and EU Lot 9.

IBM Hardware Compliance has an immediate need for a hardware engineer. This position is expected to perform physical duties as well as technical duties. The entry level engineer will work at the direction of others supporting various needs for keeping our lab testing product. The position will be a mix of hardware testing and hardware bring up - building hardware, configuring systems, installing OS, installing exercise programs and ensuring the system is ready for engineer to test. This entry level position is expected to learn on the job and advance their skills and grow.

What you will do

  • Work in an agile, collaborative environment to understand requirements, and support testing innovative products and support engineering compliance
  • Perform EMC testing of hardware products at the direction of senior engineers.
  • Work to accommodate changing priorities in a fast paced environment. You will need to be flexible and adaptable.
  • Grow within the job, meeting milestones that measure ability progress and knowledge gained.

Required skills

  • Background or familiarity with hardware and/or computers
  • Ability to follow hardware test plans/schedules centered around EMC and/or Product Safety testing requirements
  • Ability to create and follow test processes thoroughly and precisely.
  • Ability to communicate with various development groups to provide guidance and to resolve failure situations
  • Strong teamwork skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a larger design team
  • Ability to learn basic computer hardware configuration and maintenance
  • Ability to learn basic IT Administration of assembling hardware, configuration of hardware, installation of OS and basic knowledge of scripting and administration
  • Ability to read, understand and follow standards.

Preferred technical and professional experience

Desired skills

  • Previous EMC or Product Safety experience.
  • IT Administration skills of IBM Power hardware and IBM storage hardware
  • Skills with electronic monitoring and testing devices used in Electromagnetic Compatibility testing and Product Safety
  • Ability to work across teams and support IT administration for other test engineers in a hardware testing team. This is not a data center with end customers, the customers are engineers that work on early build hardware.

For part time roles, your compensation and benefits will be adjusted to reflect your hours. Benefits may be pro-rated for those who start working during the calendar year.
