Your role and responsibilities

An Application Architect is responsible for managing the overall application system, ensuring seamless interactions between components. This role establishes technology standards, translates business objectives into technology standards, and selects/defines/enforces consistent products, vendors, methodologies, and standards.

The Architect should be proficient in various technologies, including C/C++, python. They should be familiar with architectural patterns. In addition to technology skills, the Application Architect should be able to consult clients on strategies and roadmaps. They are responsible for ensuring application support, performance, availability, and scalability, as well as maintaining the functional interface to the application infrastructure. The Architect should be adept at working in multiple environments and conversant with architectural patterns.

Responsibilities: Lead cross functional teams in developing custom solutions and mentoring junior developers in best practices and design patterns, Work closely with client teams and other vendor teams, Excellent verbal and written communication, Security best practices (ISO 26262, IEC 62443, NIST 800-53, ITSG-33) and Secure communications (securing data in transit and at rest), Strong sense of initiative and ability to prioritize tasks, Creative and forward thinking, Works well in a fast-paced environment working within client committed timelines.

This role will involve working with technology that is covered by Export Regulations sanctions. To be eligible for employment in this role, you must be a Canadian citizen or Canadian Permanent Resident. Required technical and professional expertise

  • Located in Ottawa, ON (all work will be done on site at the IBM office)
  • Experience in the Defence Industry
  • Low Level Programming and embedded Systems (programming languages: C/C++; Python, bitwise operations and memory management, microcontroller programming, device drivers & firmware development, message-passing protocols, system engineering)
  • Networking and communications protocols like serial communication (e.g. UART, RS-232, RS-485), industrial and avionics protocols (e.g. Modbus, MIL-STD-1553B), and custom binary messaging formats.
  • Real-time & operating systems like embedded Linux. Excellent understanding of multi-threaded applications (e.g.: critical-sections, memory fencing, locks/mutex) and the ability to investigate and resolve issues related to these applications.
  • Knowledge of system architecture and design for custom applications, handling heterogeneous hardware, software modularity and maintainability, data serialization and security in embedded systems.
  • Integration and interoperability bridging old and new technologies, middleware development (API gateways, event brokers, service mesh, event mesh).
  • User Interface Programming - Programming languages- Java Script/ Typescript, Web frameworks Angular, React and backend for front end, node.js.

NOTE: Candidates MUST have or be eligible to obtain Secret Clearance issued by the Government of Canada. Note that candidates without this clearance must recognize that it take up to 6 months to obtain it if they have Canadian citizenship. NATO and Controlled Goods Clearances will be required once Secret clearance is proven/obtained.
