Senior Software Engineer I

Remote

This is a role for individual contributors on teams who have demonstrated solid technical competence, can solve complex problems, and can work independently. People in this role are reliable individual contributors on a team and have shown they can consistently produce technically sound solutions. They work autonomously without substantial oversight, can be pointed at a problem without clear requirements, and trusted to see it through to completion. Senior Software Engineers are reliable, trusted, knowledgeable, and productive.
Key Expectations

  • A Senior Engineer is a strong technologist and problem solver who can run with projects on their team autonomously or without substantial oversight.
  • They can iron out the vagaries of requirements, break the problem down into tractable pieces, and have enough technical knowledge to be able to then implement each of the pieces successfully with minimal hand-holding.
  • They take initiative and demonstrate ownership of their work by driving quality improvements, resolving pages or CritSits, and following through on commitments to deliver great results.
  • They provide regular and proactive updates so people know where their work stands.
  • They mentor or teach other engineers on their team or in related product areas.
  • When needed, actively participate in the interview process to hire the best people to deliver value for our customers. Embody HubSpot's HEART and DI&B values throughout the process and support excellent onboarding of new interviewers.

Unlike the Software Engineer role the Sr. Software Engineer role has a lot of room for growing within the role. From initial promotion to this role, there is an expectation of continued development to master the art of Software Engineering, learning new skills and technologies, leadership, and solving harder problems. The following are ways that a Sr. Software Engineer could develop their skills within their role:

  • They can work to master existing technical skills
  • They can expand their technical skills into new areas
  • They can take on broader system design work, being able to own larger and larger areas of the product
  • They can go deep into understanding how to build reliable, performant systems
  • They can take on mentorship of members of the team
  • They can start to take on more product leadership working with the TL, PM, and PD to guide the direction of the team
  • Their technical work and influence begins to develop a reputation among adjacent teams, and they become a trusted advisor to those teams.
  • They can serve as the technical leader for larger and larger projects.
Career Paths for this role

There are a few options to grow to a new level from this role - with a path to Technical Lead or Sr. SWE (Level 2).

Promotion to Technical Lead is a common path for Senior Software Engineers, and to qualify for this role you should not only be a strong engineer, but also demonstrate early signs of leadership. That includes proactively taking ownership of projects; communicating effectively with your TL, manager, and peers in product & engineering; and mentoring the less experienced members of your team.
