Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas, Westlake Village and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.

We are seeking a motivated Chief Engineer who is recognized as a technical leader and has experience with new product development. This candidate would also have excellent leadership and communication skills to serve as the Chief Engineer for the Advanced Test Systems Department at HRL Laboratories. The Advanced Test Systems Department is an integrated product team of mechanical, electrical, production, integration engineers, and physicists all working together to design and build advanced cryogenic test systems in support of HRL's world-leading silicon quantum dot technologies. The responsibilities will focus on the following; developing new concepts for future cryogenic product designs, recommends and manages technology insertion, leads and implements new engineering processes, drive and support a culture of engineering excellence across functional teams/partnerships, and mentorship to a team of engineers. In addition, the Chief Engineer will work closely with the Department Manager, Deputy Department manager, and Group Leads in forming strategic planning toward improving the engineering culture and process maturity to support higher TRL (Technology Readiness Level) activities/programs. Engineering experience involving the development of new products in complex programs at various Technology Readiness Levels is highly desired.

Essential Duties:
Engineering expert within the department who will provide technical contributions within mechanical, electrical and system engineering principles to critical programs.
Engagement in Chief Engineering forums; failure review boards, engineering review boards, etc.
Mentoring engineers and physicists to support their career development and building an environment of inclusivity.
Help building relationships with our customers and partners through technical excellence and integrity (e.g. communications via reviews, written reports, etc.).
Development and planning of critical engineering process (e.g. refinement of design reviews) to streamline and increase quality of product lifecycle execution.

Required Skills:
At least 20 years of technical experience in providing contributions within mechanical and or electrical on multiple product life cycles resulting in real products.
At least 5 years of technical leadership and experience in directing teams.
Experience in applying Systems Engineering principles within product teams.
Experience with operations of various cryogenic systems.
Experience with design reviews and development of criteria for key gates.
Excellent oral and written communication skills, and have willingness to mentor.
Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to work independently.

Required Education:
Minimum Master's degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or closely related discipline with at least 20 years of industry experience.

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $182,720 - $234,168 + bonus + benefits.
