About the role:

The Scientific Collaboration Director (Director) will drive multidisciplinary scientific projects to success by leveraging various research capabilities resident at Janelia. This role requires a dynamic individual with a strong STEM background, excellent people management skills, and the ability to navigate and implement new research initiatives. The Director will have a strong technical background in one or more research fields and will collaborate with technology area leaders and teams at Janelia to ensure program progress through all functional phases. The Director may also represent the Janelia research campus in efforts led by institute headquarters and will regularly interact with senior leadership.

What you'll do:

  • Scientific Leadership: Manage multiple research support teams within the Janelia Scientific Operations organization (based on area of demonstrated expertise). Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary scientific projects, ensuring timely progress and successful outcomes. The Director's primary goal is to push multidisciplinary initiatives to success, rather than focusing on any technology or research topic. The Director will support and develop staff and working relationships in accordance with HHMI's core values of Inclusion, Integrity, Innovation, Excellence, Collaboration, and Developing Others.
  • Effective Use of Resources: Work across organizational boundaries and manage projects through influence and strategic alignment with many collaborators in multiple groups.
  • Research Collaboration: Partner with area specialist leaders across disciplines including animal, cellular, and molecular biology; imaging; and engineering (both hardware and software) as well as with research customers to achieve project goals.
  • Innovation and Implementation: Identify and implement new research initiatives, developing practical plans to introduce new services and operations.
  • Scientific Communication: Facilitate effective communication of scientific goals and progress with staff, institute leadership, and external stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Address and resolve scientific challenges, balancing multiple priorities to ensure project success.
  • Representation: Work on behalf of the Janelia research campus in collaborative efforts with institute headquarters and senior leadership.

What you bring:

  • Education: Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) degree required (PhD preferred but not required).
  • Experience: Minimum of ten years experience driving research projects to success. A background in biomedical research is a plus. Experience running a research laboratory, leading independent research efforts, and/or directing multiple shared resources is desirable.
  • Skills:

    • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Proven track record of scientific achievements and the ability to drive research projects to successful completion.
    • Excellent people management skills in a research environment, strong leadership and the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
    • Ability to design resource and execution plans. Comfortable working in a dynamic and evolving research environment.
    • Effective communication skills with technical experts and researchers and other stakeholders.
    • Proven ability to balance multiple priorities and resolve conflicts.
    • Ability to engage in new initiatives and drive them to successful implementation.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet).

Compensation Range

$159,006.58 (minimum) - $301,287.79 (maximum)

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
