Summary:

As the Science Business Analyst, you will support HHMI's mission to support and move science forward through our Investigator, Freeman Hrabowski Scholar, and Hanna H. Gray Fellows Programs. You will develop and curate data sets, execute data analysis approaches, and create data visualizations. Your work analyzing data to reveal trends and insights will be used to shape programs and policies and optimize processes. Collaborating with IT professionals, you will enhance technical solutions that the Science Department and other HHMI teams rely on.

The ideal candidate will have curiosity and be eager to learn new things and have an interest in data modeling, data manipulation, and data analytics.

The position requires you to be detail-oriented, highly analytical, and innovative as you will need to maintain accuracy through long-term projects and respond to rolling tasks. Strong written and verbal communication skills are crucial while working both independently and collaboratively within the department and across HHMI.

This role reports to the Director, Science Program Administration and will report to our headquarters in Chevy Chase, MD three days a week.

What you'll do:

Enhance and Improve Custom Applications

  • Propose and monitor the development of new functionality for and fixes to custom applications, including Science360, the Science Portal, and the Application & Review Channel (ARC).
  • Serve as a liaison to IT developers by communicating requests for new functionality to these teams.
  • Collaborate with developers to identify the best ways to improve these custom systems.
  • Conduct user acceptance testing to ensure new functionality fulfills requirements.

Data Collection and Analyses

  • Use multiple data sources for integrated evaluations of historical program parameters and long-term trend projections of various Science Programs.
  • Identify internal and/or external data sources. Collect and curate data, as required, including crafting and conducting ad hoc surveys.
  • Design flexible data structures for storing data in a format that will support analyses.
  • Develop and execute data analyses to meet requirements and for the scope of data under review.
  • Generate graphs/summaries to convey messages; incorporate feedback in an iterative process.
  • Prepare data visualizations and slides for presentations by department leaders.
  • Explain data limitations to programmatic and department leaders.

Data Validation and Integrity

  • Perform data validation and integrity checks to ensure the accuracy and reliability of analyses.
  • Implement measures to maintain data quality and consistency.

What you bring:

  • Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Three to five years of professional experience supporting business operations.

    • Recent college graduates and others with equivalent professional experience in summer internships or part-time positions are also encouraged to apply.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel for data analysis.
  • Preferred experience with Tableau, Prism, or R Project software for data analysis and visualization.
  • Desirable experience in graphic design (Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop) and web design.
  • Familiarity with scientific databases (PubMed, ORCID, NIH RePORTer) is a plus.
  • Strong quantitative and analytical abilities.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to understand and interpret business requirements, offering recommendations for efficiency improvements.
  • Effective collaboration within the Science Department and across departments, especially with IT team members.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with data.
  • Willingness to learn emerging technologies, including AI-based methodologies.
  • Ability to use good judgment, show initiative, and work independently.

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range
$82,088.00 (minimum) - $102,610.00 (midpoint) - $133,393.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
