Intro:
Are you interested in playing a role in cutting edge science? Do you want to contribute to the development of laboratory techniques that help research understand cell structure, cell interactions, and protein localization? Do you have exceptional attention to detail, steady hands, and dexterity when working with small and delicate specimens? If so, then this is a job for you.
About the role:
The Histology Shared Resource at HHMI's Janelia Research Campus is searching for a Research Specialist. In this role, you will use your experience with Histologic techniques in whole animal and tissue fixation, sectioning, labeling, and mounting tissue for microscopic examination, to provide support for advanced methods. You will collaborate with researchers to develop and optimize new techniques such as tissue clearing, expansion microscopy, and large-scale RNA labeling. This is all in support of research to develop new molecular tools and imaging, to understand neuronal circuits involved in natural behaviors, and to see how cells work and communicate across tissues and whole organisms.
An ideal candidate has a master's degree with 4 years of experience (or PhD) in a life science field with lab-based research experience and a foundational knowledge of neuroscience. We are seeking someone proficient in performing research-based histology techniques and experience handling fish and rodents, as well as previous experience troubleshooting and optimizing histology techniques and protocols.
What we provide:
- A competitive compensation package, with comprehensive health and welfare benefits.
- Gaining hands-on experiences and knowledge of various histology techniques in a collaborative and supportive research environment.
- Professional development opportunities through internal and external conferences and workshops.
- Professional memberships to histology and core facility organizations.
What you'll do:
- Responsible for one or more of the specialized procedures performed such as tissue clearing, tissue expansion for expansion microscopy, immuno-histochemistry, or in situ hybridization.
- Perform whole animal fixation and tissue dissection of fish and rodents.
- Perform standard, advanced, and novel tissue labeling techniques, including H&E, silver stain, DAPI, and complex antibody protocols.
- Identify methodological problems in research protocols and assist with implementing modifications.
- Optimize established protocols for new labeling techniques and tissue types.
- Perform quality control on preliminary assessment of tissues and microscope slides to ensure standards are met.
- Provide status reports on current projects to the team and the researchers.
- Train new team members and researchers on standard and complex procedures.
What you bring:
- Masters degree in Neuroscience, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or other life science or HT (ASCP) certification with four years of lab-based research experience, or a PhD. Equivalent experience will be considered.
- Expertise in one or more of the following techniques; tissue clearing, expansion microscopy, in situ hybridization, or IHC.
- Proficient in rodent perfusion, fixation, and tissue collection methods.
- Proficient with assessing fluorescent labeling for quality control of protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to identify, evaluate, and present recommendations on new techniques.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to document and present to researchers, team members, and supervisor the status and results of projects and work in progress.
- Ability to interact with collaborators at all levels, including senior scientific management, project scientists, Janelia lab heads, visitors, and scientific support staff.
