The lab of Dr. Richard Flavell at Yale University is seeking an experienced Research Specialist to join the team. The Flavell Lab is interested in the molecular and cellular basis of the immune response. Their research leverages transgenic and gene-targeted mice to study the innate and adaptive arms of the immune system, and how these reciprocally regulate a broad range of biological processes. About the Research Specialist role:
You will hold a key role within the team and work on important research involving gnotobiotic and mutant mice. The successful candidate for this position is a highly organized, self-motivated professional who has impeccable follow-through, outstanding communication skills, and a strong proactive approach to work. This is an opportunity to have a tremendous impact working with a collegial lab team that is pioneering innovative discoveries within the realm of immunobiology.

This is a fixed-term position with HHMI that is expected to last until approximately August 31, 2025. After August 31, 2025, this position is anticipated to continue on through Yale University.

What you'll do:

  • Maintenance of breeding of gnotobiotic mice and mutant mice colonies to include intercrossing of complex genotypes involving multiple genes and/or alleles.
  • Coordinating the receipt, processing, quality assurance, cryopreservation, recovery, and inventory of human fetal tissue samples and cell populations.
  • Coordinating laboratory bench assignments and complex analyses, evaluating research data, and ensuring compliance with protocol and overall laboratory objectives.
  • Recommending the design and implementation of procedures and protocols.
  • Ensuring data results are compiled, analyzed, and presented properly.
  • Preparing scientific reports and papers for research proposals and publication.
  • Participating in regularly scheduled 'research in progress' meetings.
  • Interacting regularly with both internal contacts and external contacts to consult on research methods and to keep abreast of product information and developments.
  • Preparing and amending standard operating procedures specific to this position.

What you bring:

  • A bachelor's degree in a relevant scientific field of study is required. A master's degree is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with mice in a research laboratory environment is required.
  • Strong sense of self-motivation, integrity, trustworthiness, and ability to work in a diverse environment with people from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Passion for efficiency, operational excellence, and process improvement.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and high attention to detail.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, analytical, and teamwork skills.
  • Strong knowledge of computers and MS Office software.

Physical Requirements

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. The position requires mobility, including the ability to move materials weighing up to several pounds (such as a laptop computer or tablet). Work may involve possible exposure to malodorous vapors, low dose radiation, contamination by toxic chemicals and acids and presence of carcinogenic substances or other hazardous materials.

Compensation Range
$67,095.00 (minimum) - $83,800.00 (midpoint) - $108,990.00 (maximum)

Pay Type:
Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
