We are currently seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to work within the lab of Dr. Michelle Wang, Professor of Physics, J.G. White Distinguished Professor in the Physical Sciences, and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. We aim to understand how fundamental processes, such as transcription and replication, can alter DNA topology and how these topological changes impact these processes. We operate at the intersection of physics and biology - pioneering single-molecule techniques to investigate the mechanics and topology of fundamental DNA processes and theoretically modeling these processes using statistical mechanics and thermodynamics. Our studies have revealed the essential roles of mechanics, topology, and biomolecular condensation in fundamental DNA processes. These studies demonstrate how complex biological phenomena can arise from simple physical properties inherent to biomolecules.

About the position:
The successful candidate will carry out projects to investigate the mechanics and topology of fundamental DNA processes using state-of-the-art single-molecule methods pioneered in the lab. The Wang lab has invented several single-molecule manipulation techniques, including the angular optical trap (AOT), the DNA unzipping mapper, tracker, and staller, and the nanophotonic standing-wave array trap (nSWAT). The candidate will also have the opportunity to develop novel instruments for enabling new topology studies, gain an in-depth understanding of data via theoretical and computational modeling, and investigate the in vivo significance through cellular and genomic studies. They will be part of a dynamic, collaborative team and have the opportunity to contribute to unique and exciting science.
Application Instructions:
- Applicants should submit both their curriculum vitae and a detailed statement on how their experience and interests relate to the lab's work.
Candidate requirements:
- Ph.D. in physics, biophysics, applied physics, engineering, or a related field.
- Proficiency in hands-on experiments, computer programming, and data analysis.
- An interest in curiosity-driven inquiries.
- Problem-solving skills.
- A strong work ethic, self-motivation, and an ability to work both independently and in a collaborative group environment.
- Effective communication skills
