Senior R&D Electrical Engineer

Role

Hitachi Energy is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer for its Technology Center group in its Raleigh, NC location. This position is an electrical engineer role in an R&D team that is serving global technology development of the liquid-immersed transformer business. Our business is power equipment manufacturing which involves various business processes from engineering to manufacturing. This position will be in the office work with hybrid remote working possibility. Candidates will be required to travel up to 10% (globally) based on project needs.

Typical duties/responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Execution of R&D projects as agreed within the Distribution Transformer business. Improvements and new developments of Technical, Production Standards, and Material specifications. Identification, exploration, and implementation of technology/product development and growth strategies to enhance and secure global positioning. Defining technology gaps, and active participation in technology development to provide sufficient technical solutions and best practices in developed software. Caring about the final product (software) shape and usefulness for business. Developing software specifications based on technical standards (company and global) and own technical knowledge. Analysis of software behavior, defining expected results, and finding problems related to the implementation of technology or missing functionalities. Analysis of risks and possible problems in calculations. Review software code logic and debug software to identify root cause for bugs and issues. For new features and software architecture refactoring efforts, propose software architecture workflow for the solution using transformer domain logic. Being updated in the technology area. Gathering data about best practices and product details. Use domain knowledge during software requirements definition and software specification development. Ensures and fosters own organization and employees to have the ability to challenge status-quo in technical issues, projects, and/or processes with the goal of design and process optimization using best practices. May participate in intellectual property evaluations and development of patent applications.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering with 5 years of related experience or a Master's degree with 2 years of related experience.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in electrical design and development, with a focus on Liquid-Filled distribution transformers in the power industry.
  • Familiar with database operations and SQL queries for analysis
  • Familiar with the DevOps life cycle of backlog management and CI/CD process. Basic understanding of Azure infrastructure (Azure Batch, Application Service, SQL server, etc.)
  • Proven experience in other projects related to selected transformer domains (involvement in R&D or production designs).
  • Good command of oral and written English language skills.
  • Proven experience in working in complex projects acting as technical lead and/or project management experience in leading complex R&D projects.
  • Proven experience working with factories for requirement gathering, implementation follow-up, and bug/issue resolution.
  • Understand the software testing process and perform functional tests. Understand the impact of engineering activities on software development and are knowledgeable enough to assess what types of information are crucial to provide requested software features.
  • Ability to interact with the Distribution Transformer Global Product Group (GPG), management, developer engineers, and final users in a local Hitachi Energy organization and present technical concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • SW development experience with C# .NET in Azure environment.
  • Comfortable with reading and understanding C# .NET code base and execution of basic operations in IDE for debugging, testing, and bug investigation. Ability to write simple C# logic for transformer domain design workflow.
  • Familiar with Hitachi Energy technical standards (StarLiquid) and design tools (CDSe)
  • Accepts positive change and can communicate outcomes and benefits to others.
  • Deep understanding of technical aspects in multiple disciplines or functional areas and ability to make deep-dive analyses on complex projects.
  • Lead complex projects/tasks using the Gate Model Project management method, suggest improvements/redefine the process, mentoring on using the Gate model.
  • Ability to lead risk assessments together with leading the mitigation actions on the global technology organizational level.
