The Opportunity
We are looking for a master thesis student at our dynamic control design department, who would like to join our multinational organization with lots of development opportunities. Our team is dedicated to creating a future where innovative digital technology brings cleaner energy to people around the world. If this opportunity excites you, we encourage you to apply!
How you will make an impact
- You will create a simple power systems model in Matlab/Simulink with a Thevenin AC network, the converter modelled as a voltage source and fixed DC voltage at the DC side for different operating modes.
- Implement generic models in Matlab/Simulink for grid forming control of VSC HVDC, with and without embedded current control.
- Implement a generic model for grid following control of VSC HVDC.
- You will perform linearization of the developed model to obtain a linear state space model.
- You will verify time domain behaviour by comparing simulation results from nonlinear and linearized models.
- Use the linearized model to investigate how system stability is affected by different control system parameters and compare the different control principles, for example eigen value analysis, participation factors.

Your background
- Pursuing a Master of Science degree.
- You will create a generic VSC model that can be linearized in Matlab/Simulink. It is proposed that the study is done in the framework of a 20-week master thesis project.
- You have knowledge in MATLAB extensively used within HVDC system studies due to its capacity to perform complex analysis within the same environment.
- You will create a simplified model in Matlab/Simulink that permits to perform fast small signal analysis of the control system and draw general conclusions.
- This can also be seen as a feasibility study to evaluate the capacity of Matlab/Simulink for future development and perform benchmarking between other tools that have linearization capabilities (e.g. Dymola, Power Factory).
