Electrical Design Engineer
Job Description:
The Hitachi Energy factory in Bland, VA has an immediate opening for one experienced Electrical Engineer. The focus of this position will be on designing basic and complex dry type transformers in accordance with electrical and mechanical requirements as specified by customers and industry standards. Additionally, this position will apply state-of-the-art design methods, calculations and prudent engineering practices in order to efficiently transfer these designs into a highly effective production environment. This advanced level engineering position will also engage in product and process improvement projects for all products within the business scope. This position will require, as needed/necessary, collaboration with global colleagues to define and implement best design practices and common tools as defined by the Global Product Group. The successful candidate will also work directly with local growth, product development and production teams to penetrate new markets with highly optimized customer solutions.

The ideal candidate must be highly motivated, disciplined and able to effectively assist, and at times, lead cross-functional teams to accomplish clearly defined goals and objectives that directly contribute to profitable growth in the organization. This individual will work very closely with team members from all disciplines of the business including, marketing, production engineering, supply chain, manufacturing and quality.
Required Experience and Skills:
All candidates MUST have the following experiences to qualify for consideration:
A relevant BS or MS Degree (electrical or mechanical engineering, physics, etc.,)
Minimum 5 years dry type transformer design experience
Sound people skills that build effective team environments where individuals work collaboratively to achieve a well-defined strategy
Possess a customer focused mentality that fosters strong customer relationships and long-term commitments
Basic educational experience performing design work based on goal(s) or problem statements
Solid organizational and communication skills; the ideal candidate will be detail-oriented so that designs, design algorithms and test data are thoroughly documented and design requirements coordinated with all relevant disciplines
Proficiency in fundamental business tools such as Microsoft Suite applications and related business and engineering software applications (CAD/AUTOCAD, Visio, Excel, PowerPoint, Adobe, etc.)
The ability to quickly learn to use, and apply internally written programs used for transformer design
The ability to prioritize responsibilities and work independently
Must be willing and able to travel within the U.S. and internationally to vendors, customers or other ABB facilities for projects and training (5 - 10%).
Proficiency with regard to reading, writing and speaking English
Must be legally authorized to work full time in the United States and must have a valid driver's license.
Highly Desirable Experience and Skills:
Priority will be given to candidates with developed skills in any of the following areas:
Engineering experience with VSD, Low Voltage (600V Class), Rectifier Duty and/or Traction transformers
Experience with Design and Process FMEA's
Exposure to industry standards such as ANSI/IEEE C57.12.01, C57.12.51, C57.12.55, C57.12.90, C57.12.91, C57.96, C57.94, NFPA 70/National Electrical Code, UL, cUL, CSA and IEC
Working in multinational teams
Exposure to Value Engineering and Design for Manufacture practices
Experience with mechanical and/or electrical simulations
