What's the role?

The Technical Writing team at HERE works with subject matter experts across the development organization to produce technical documentation that enables customers to do amazing things with HERE APIs, SDKs, and location data. We focus on the user while working within an Agile environment, creating and maintaining guides, API references, and data specifications. We ask lots of questions. We work with colleagues around the world while bringing our own knowledge and perspective to continually improve HERE documentation.

As a Sr. Technical Writer, you will create documentation that empowers developers to turn location data into business value with the HERE platform. You will write tutorials, create and edit API references, and explain concepts in a clear and direct style. You will collaborate directly with product managers, developers, and map data experts to develop documentation for new products and new features. Over time you will become an expert in the products you document and will be an active collaborator with subject matter experts. You will take action in response to user feedback to continually improve HERE documentation.

As a member of the Technical Writing team, you will:

  • Know your subject matter:
    • Be curious about how HERE products work
    • Develop product expertise for those products you support
    • Gain hands-on experience using the product
    • Understand the overall HERE platform and how all the offerings are related
  • Participate in the Agile process:
    • Attend Agile ceremonies (scrums, demos, retrospectives)
    • Take ownership of the tasks assigned to you
    • Collaborate with scrum teammates to meet sprint commitments related to documentation
    • Facilitate reviews by setting deadlines and following up to drive the review to completion
  • Write high-quality documentation:
    • Focus on the user's perspective
    • Understand and follow HERE technical writing standards
    • Write documentation that is clear and free of jargon
    • Know how your doc fits into the overall HERE documentation architecture and place information in the appropriate location
    • Raise issues when the architecture may need to be adjusted
    • Test documentation by executing the procedures as written and confirming that the procedure is correct
  • Know the HERE doc tools
    • Have expert knowledge in how to use the the HERE doc platform to write, review, approve, and publish documentation for your products
    • Be able to help developers and other non-writers contribute to documentation
    • Identify areas for improvement

 

Who are you?

  • Experience as a technical writer, with a focus on documentation for a developer audience
  • A degree in technical writing, English, linguistics, computer science, or related field
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to conform to a style guide based on U.S. English
  • Experience working as a technical writer in an Agile team and collaborating with product managers, product owners, and developers
  • Ability to gather information through a variety of methods, including interviews, hands-on work with the product, chat, and email
  • Experience documenting REST APIs
  • Experience working in a docs-as-code environment
  • Technical skills:
    • Git
    • Markdown
    • DITA
    • OpenAPI

Bonus if you have experience in:

  • Editing the work of other technical writers and employing editing tools
  • Working with location data and maps
  • Writing code examples for use in documentation
  • Using GitLab to manage documentation source files
  • Creating video to augment written documentation
  • Writing content for translation
  • Supporting AI search tools

 

The expected base salary range for this position is $78,400 to $112,000 per year. Actual compensation will be based on factors such as skills and experience. 

This position is also eligible for a target annual performance bonus, which is subject to company and individual performance.
