Principal Systems Engineer

What's the role?

As an IT Operations Engineer on our team, you will:

· Enjoy automating critical functions

· Architect new and improved Connectivity offerings

Responsibilities for Role:

· Propose, architect and implement solutions to expand and improve the Connectivity team’s cloud and network offerings.

· Leverage DevOps methodologies to automate deployment and operational processes using scripting and tools to ensure repeatability, auditability, and efficiency.

· Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to integrate our services into larger workflows.

· Manage, maintain, and expand our network overlay infrastructure across multiple cloud providers.

· Build and maintain relationships with third-party vendors, ensuring optimal product and service delivery.

· Continuously seek opportunities to enhance the quality and performance of our services.

· Review and improve current processes to enhance efficiency and implement best practices.

· Serve as an escalation point for issues related to services provided by the Connectivity team.

· Act as a custodian of HERE’s financial spending, identifying cost-saving opportunities while maintaining service quality.

· Collect and analyze data to support informed decision-making and improve services.

· Contribute as a subject matter expert in Connectivity team offerings.

Who are you?

You are a motivated, fast learner with an interest in IT operations and cloud infrastructure. You hold a bachelor’s degree and have 4+ years of industry experience, including:

· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

· Experience with AWS networking and infrastructure.

· The ability to navigate complex engineering concepts with ease.

· Comfort working as part of a global team.

· Advanced scripting/coding knowledge (e.g., Bash, Python).

· Experience managing highly available production environments.

 

Requirements:

· Strong foundational knowledge of networking technologies (routing, firewalls, NAT), though vendor-specific knowledge is not critical.

· Proven scripting/programming experience – Bash and Python3 are required; Golang and network automation skills are a plus.

· Experience with network infrastructure (e.g., BGP, IPtables, IPSec/WireGuard) and cloud networking (AWS, Azure, OCI) is highly desirable.

· Familiarity with DDI (DHCP, DNS, IPAM) services.

· Experience using Git for version control and collaboration.

· Ability to work in a scalable, production-critical environment ensuring high availability, reliability, and performance.

· Preferred certifications include AWS, Cisco, or Juniper.

 

 

In addition, you will:

· Collaborate with other HERE teams to ensure best practices in cost optimization, security, fault tolerance, and performance.

· Participate in broader organizational initiatives and contribute to projects as needed.

· Validate and assess third-party tools for use by the Connectivity team or the broader HERE organization.

· Work closely with team members to implement optimization strategies across AWS, SaaS vendors, and other service providers.

· Provide direction for architectural optimization either directly or through consultation with external support.

The HERE Cloud and Employee Foundation’s Connectivity team is responsible for managing the cloud and ground network infrastructure and services that allow HERE Technologies to operate efficiently. We support end users through remote access technologies and office LAN/WLAN, maintain Data Center infrastructure, and enhance multi-cloud communication with a network overlay. Our team interconnects resources via overlays and a global MPLS WAN, while operating firewalls to protect our assets. We also manage internal DDI (DNS, DHCP, IPAM) and external DNS services. We develop automation that plays a crucial role in optimizing and managing our workflows for these essential services.
