Our mission is to help small businesses start and grow. We are building financial products that empower business owners and enable them to focus on their products and on growing their businesses. At Hatch we care about creating solutions which provide accessible, transparent, and fair access to financial products. Our team is spread across the US and Canada, with a physical office in San Francisco and more opening around the country soon. Our company is growing and we’d love for you to grow with us!
Opportunity
As one of the first Data Platform Engineers at Hatch, you will help set the data platform engineering foundations for the company. This will be a high visibility role that will add significant value to every part of our company to support our goal of helping small business owners (SMBs) scale and grow.

Data and Analytics
The Data Team at Hatch is small, but strong and expanding quickly. We use Python and SQL to deep dive into data while using various other technologies to investigate further if needed. The company uses Segment, Fivetran, and Mode for data instrumentation, and business analytics (but we’re always evaluating new vendors).
The ideal candidate will have:
- 2-3 years working experience as a Data Engineer, Data Platform Engineer, or Data Infrastructure Engineer
- Experience with data platform technologies (dbt, Airflow, Hadoop, M/R, Hive, Spark, Metastore, Presto, Flume, Kafka, ClickHouse, Flink etc)
- Knowledge on how to design, build and maintain data transformations efficiently and reliably across a variety of use cases (e.g. reporting, growth analysis, multi-dimensional analysis)
- Experience in performing data analysis, data ingestion and ETL (Extraction, Transformation & Loading)
- The ability to work and thrive in a small group: strong communication, collaboration, and empathy
You will succeed in this role if you:
- Have experience working across multiple engineering teams to drive data platform products forward
- Have experience in building fault-tolerant data pipelines with logging, monitoring, alerting, and observability.
- A track record of making quality vs. deadline tradeoffs in fast-paced environments
- Demonstrate resourcefulness and comfort with ambiguity—we won't know the answers to everything, but we'll figure it out together
We’d love to have you apply, even if you feel unsure about whether you meet every single requirement in this posting.
What You Can Expect
You can expect to familiarize yourself with our databases, tables, and your team in the first week. You can expect to work directly with other data and engineering teams on a daily basis, and partner with your lead to help you if you get stuck. You can also expect to get a good grasp on understanding our users, how Hatch works and how small business banking and credit also work!
After one month, you should have an informed approach on how we should store and analyze our data, as well as a platform to host machine learning models in production (with both offline batch and online real-time decisioning capabilities). You’ll have the autonomy to implement a data platform roadmap from scratch as we build the next generation of the company’s ingestion, analytics, and machine learning pipelines.
