Storey Publishing, a leading publisher of do-it-yourself technique books, seeks an enthusiastic Senior Designer to embrace the challenge of complementing each author’s work with book design, original illustration or photography that enhances the book’s distinctiveness and makes it accessible as well as practical. By dedicating significant attention and time (often about 14 months from manuscript to print!) to each book, we make the final product shine.  
Senior Designers manage multiple projects simultaneously, developing creative and marketable solutions. This role will be responsible for complete book designs, from covers to interiors, contributes to the entire bookmaking process, envisions and executes art plans, and directs outside creative talent, such as photographers, stylists, and illustrators.

Remote candidates will be considered as long as they are within driving distance of the North Adams office (3-4 hours). Attending key meetings and photo shoots will be necessary. Please note that staff in the North Adams office currently work in-office on a two day per week hybrid schedule. Effective in January 2025, HBG’s hybrid model will be 3 days in-office, 2 days working from home.
  Essential Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Design covers and interiors for books across a diverse spectrum of subject areas and audiences, from gardening, crafts, and cooking, to nature, wellness, and children’s non-fiction. 
  • Build page layouts for books, taking projects to final files.
  • Scout outside designers, illustrators, and photographers. Art direct and project manage hired creative talent.
  • Collaborate with and support Editorial team to realize a collective vision.
  • Collaborate with and support Prepress and Production departments to ensure the quality and correctness of print reproduction.
  • Work with Creative Director and Managing Editor to maintain and troubleshoot design, illustration, and photography schedules for assigned books.
Skill Requirements: 
  • 4-5+ years of work experience in book design, including initial concept generation, through comps, presentations, and preparation of electronic pre-press files.
  • Focus on print-based design is required.
  • An interest in Storey’s publishing focus.
  • Strong organizational, communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in a Macintosh environment and a command of Adobe InDesign as well as a working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.
  • Ability to prepare electronic files for press according to print specifications provided is also required.
  • Must have close visual acuity to perform activities such as on-screen design; viewing page proofs for color accuracy; visually inspecting fine design elements; cannot be color blind
  • Must be able to travel to and work at offsite photo shoots

The compensation range for this position is $60,000 - $72,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
