SUMMARY:
Little, Brown Books for Young Readers is expanding its YA/crossover and new adult fiction publishing. We are seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial editor with a passion for upper YA and/or new adult publishing and a proven track record of acquiring successful books in either or both categories. The ideal candidate will have a commercial eye, strong agent relationships, firm grasp on the market with an ability to identify and predict trends, and interest in publishing books across genres from a wide variety of voices. This editor or senior editor will acquire projects traditionally, through IP development, and from seeking out self-published talent; and see books from contract negotiation through the editorial and publication processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Build a list of commercial novels featuring characters in their late teens and twenties, across genres including (but not limited to) romantic contemporary fiction, fantasy, and mystery/thriller. 
  • Create IP proposals and solicit, evaluate, and develop manuscripts for acquisition.
  • Collaborate effectively and punctually with authors and agents, as well as with the Design, Managing Editorial, Sales, Publicity, Marketing, and other departments.
  • Research and identify trends and opportunities for strategic list and profit growth.
  • Negotiate primary deal terms.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES REQUIRED: 
  • Minimum 3 years of acquisitions experience
  • Clear editorial vision and a strong understanding of both the overall market and each individual acquisition’s target readership
  • Strong agent contacts and relationships
  • A thorough understanding of the overall publishing process, with particular expertise in all stages of the editorial process
  • Proven ability to delivery timely, accurate work product, with strong follow-through
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • An interest in innovation and ability to think outside of the box
  • Results-oriented and able to work both independently and collaboratively

The compensation range for this position is $66,500-$85,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
