Storey Publishing, a leading publisher of do-it-yourself technique books, seeks an experienced editor with a passion for the DIY lifestyle and Storey’s key categories—including homesteading, gardening, backyard building, self-sufficiency skills, and crafts.The successful candidate will have experience with developmental and substantive book editing.
 
The position requires: an ability to provide in-depth editing and writing support to first-time authors, as well as work collaboratively with authors, editors, and art directors.
 
Ideally the candidate will be available to work in the North Adams, MA office three days per week, but we may consider remote arrangements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Perform strong developmental and line-level editing, according to Storey’s in-house style, working closely with authors and acquiring editors to ensure that books deliver in-depth content in both text and visuals.
  • Plan illustration and photography needs for assigned books, working collaboratively with the art director and author; plan and attend photo shoots, as needed, to ensure the accuracy of all step-by-step photos. Research reference material for new illustrations, as needed.
  • Act as project manager for all assigned books, managing the schedule (in conjunction with Managing Editor), monitoring the book budget, hiring freelance copyeditors and proofreaders; reviewing all stages of page proofs; and working collaboratively with key team members in design, production, and sales to shepherd the book through the 14–18 month book production process, from receipt of manuscript to delivery to printer.
  • Support acquiring editors with author/topic research and related tasks, as needed.
  • Participate in regular acquisitions pitch meetings with Editorial Director and other acquisitions editors; provide feedback and guidance on pitched proposals in all Storey’s publishing categories.
  • Write strong positioning statements, marketing copy, and sales conference presentations for assigned books.
  • Conceive and develop two original book ideas per year; reach out to a diverse range of potential authors; provide proposal development support to un-agented authors.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required:
  • BS or B.A. in English, journalism, writing, or related field
  • 4+ years of book editing experience
  • Enthusiasm, knowledge, and skills in gardening, crafting, and other DIY topics and lifestyle
  • Commitment to elevating a diverse range of voices
  • Superior writing and editing skills and knowledge of Chicago Manual of Style guidelines.
  • Ability to evaluate layouts for reader usability, as well as guide the selection of photography and illustrations based on editorial content. 
  • Flexible team player with strong commitment to working in a highly collaborative environment
  • Knowledge of MS Word

The compensation range for this position is $48,000-$53,500 per year. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location — talk with your recruiter to learn more. There may be times that you will be required (or requested) to work overtime due to the nature of your role or exceptional workload issues or special projects.
