As a Technician in the Mechanical Systems and Design Laboratory, you will support research and development of advanced mechanical components and/or systems for a broad range of current and future GE products. The Technician will support modeling, prototyping, assembly, test, and/or data acquisition of seals, bearings, shafts, dampers, and structural or other related components.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the design and modeling of rig test equipment or test articles
  • Support the manufacturing or prototyping of test equipment or test articles
  • Complete assembly of test rigs
  • Specify, apply, and route various types of instrumentation
  • Specify, prepare, and operate data acquisition systems
  • Procure parts and materials to build prototype mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical hardware
  • Collaborate with Facilities and Safety personnel to ensure Standard Operating Procedures are written, approved, and followed
  • Operate test rigs with high speed rotation, high pressure, and high temperature
  • Assist with data post-processing and project technical communication
  • Collaborate with Research Engineers on project scoping, priority, and execution
  • Protect intellectual property and patent work as appropriate

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field or Associates degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field with a minimum of 3 years of industrial experience in a laboratory or research environment
  • Experience with mechanical test design and execution
  • A demonstrated record of being able to utilize basic designs to build quality hardware
  • Demonstrated ability to learn new areas of work
  • Basic knowledge of transducers, and data acquisition systems
  • Familiarity with machine shop equipment such as mills, grinders, and lathes
  • Ability to understand and use service documentation
  • Ability to work during first shift, with the possible requirement to work 2nd or 3rd shift under some situations
  • Ability to work with diverse, high-paced teams
  • Willing to work on government funded programs

  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.
  • Must be 18 years or older.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience operating high speed rotating machinery in a laboratory environment will be strongly preferred
  • Experience operating facility services including high pressure air compressors, heaters, chillers, etc.
  • Ability to program data acquisition software including Labview and Labwindows
  • Experience with data reduction and analysis
  • Passion for hands-on development and laboratory work
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to new processes
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems
  • Ability to work with periodic guidance on tasks and innovate
  • Rapid acquisition of new skills and technologies
  • Certified Six Sigma Green Belt will be strongly preferred.
  • Ability to work well with diverse teams, including Researchers, Machinists, and Vendors
  • Strong debugging and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent time management skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in parallel
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent teaming skills

The weekly pay range for this position is $1,292.30 - $1,836.49. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position will be posted until at least 6/26/2024
