Job Description Summary

This role is within the Fuels and Digital Engineering Methods, Analysis, and Design team, which is responsible for the development, maintenance, analytics, technical consultation, and licensing of engineering computer codes, correlations, methodologies, and new fuel and core designs related to new and advanced reactor types, with a special focus on the Natrium Demonstration Reactor, a sodium-cooled fast reactor. The team supports the design of advanced nuclear applications through engineering scope ownership of advanced methods and safety analyses, delivering high caliber development and analysis of complex technologies. The team integrates and develops nuclear, thermal hydraulics, safety analysis, and other technologies, application methodologies and supporting processes that meet business needs across the organization. The Technical Leader is a senior-band position responsible for the planning and execution of work scope spanning multiple disciplines.

This role contributes to company objectives in the fields of reactor thermal-hydraulic analysis and methods. It integrates and develops thermal-hydraulic technologies, application methodologies, and supporting processes that meet business needs across the organization with a primary focus towards advanced reactor applications. Specifically, this includes NQA-1 qualification of thermal-hydraulic computational software for fast reactors, code benchmarking, associated documentation, licensing activities, code deployment, and user support.

The technical leader role involves leading engineers towards development, verification, validation, and maintenance of computational methods for thermal-hydraulic and nuclear analysis of sodium-cooled fast reactors, as well as other advanced and existing reactor designs. The technical leader will also plan, assign and manage resources for the team and provide coaching/mentoring to less experienced team members.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Technical Leader will work within the FDE Methods, Analysis, and Design Engineering team of GEH. This team integrates and develops nuclear, thermal hydraulics, safety analysis, and other technologies, application methodologies and supporting processes that meet business needs across the organization.

Essential responsibilities include the following:

  • Provide support to the functional manager to plan, assign, and manage resources and schedules.
  • Provide technical leadership for reactor thermal-hydraulic and nuclear analysis and methodologies.
  • Provide strategic vision on the development and application of methods for deployment with advanced reactor concepts.
  • Work within an approved regulatory framework for nuclear software quality assurance for engineering computer programs.
  • Responsible for leading the technical development, accuracy and uncertainty qualification, testing, verification, regulatory licensing, and maintenance of analytical methods required for evaluation of steady-state and transient core/fuel performance of nuclear reactors.
  • Work with project managers and commercial program managers to provide work planning, scheduling, and technical support for customer deliverables. Assure work plans are in alignment with defined objectives, are resourced appropriately to meet the schedule and communicate status of work effectively.
  • Build and maintain relationships with teams and commercial leaders within the broader Engineering organization to understand and/or establish upcoming work demands and provide inputs on team capability and availability.
  • Effectively communicate and coordinate activities with other team members on engineering/technical issues.
  • Meet customer commitments and drive continuous improvement.
  • Effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Provide engineering expertise, guidance, and technical mentoring.
  • Foster integrity, safety, and quality as the most important priorities. Drive a team culture based on teamwork, integrity, candor, transparency, and execution on commitments by providing constructive coaching feedback to employees.
  • Support teams working in various time zones globally.

  • Prepare, communicate, and present complex technical issues to internal and external customers and recommend solutions.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, and calculations for internal and external customers.
  • Perform manager review and approval of engineering technical deliverables for GNF/GEH customers.
  • Support the interface with various regulatory agencies (NRC, DOE, etc.) as appropriate.
  • Ensure work is performed with high quality in accordance with NRC rules and regulations, customer requirements, and business quality assurance standards.
  • Advocate for, and lead, team process improvements to drive speed and simplification.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering, Computational Methods, Physics, Mathematics or related Science or technical discipline.
  • At least 8 years of experience in engineering design and/or project leadership experience.
  • At least 6 years of experience in the nuclear industry or equivalent large scale new build experience in the power industry.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • The preferred work location for this role is at the GEH Headquarters Wilmington, NC but qualified remote candidates will be considered.
  • This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.

Desired Characteristics:

  • M.S. or Ph.D. in computational methods, thermal-hydraulics, nuclear engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience with project management tools and schedule development.
  • Experience with team leadership, project management, and resource allocation. Understand standard engineering work planning, scheduling, and conduct independent work requiring judgement in the application of engineering techniques.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skill.
  • Prior experience working on advanced nuclear designs.
  • Cognizant of current industry developments including the role of SMRs, microreactors, and non-electrical applications.
  • Experience in new product development within complex systems.
  • Extensive knowledge of the fundamental principles of nuclear engineering such as nuclear physics and thermal hydraulics.
  • Prior experience with subchannel thermal-hydraulic methods for any reactor type (e.g., TRACG, RELAP, GOTHIC, COBRA, DASSH, SUPERENERGY and variants).
  • Prior experience with neutronic methods (eg., MCNP, PARTISN, MC2-3, DIF3D).
  • Prior experience with the development of new fuel designs including the management of thermal hydraulic testing (integral effects or separate-effects; full-scale or reduced scale).
  • Prior experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS-Fluent or similar.
  • Experience with software Commercial Grade Dedication in accordance with NQA-1.
  • Programming experience with Fortran or C/C++, and Python.
  • Extensive knowledge of methodology development.
  • Experience with coding and code development.
  • Working knowledge of nuclear reactor core licensing, technical specifications, safety margin bases, code methodology licensing, and related federal regulations.

The base pay range for this position is $112,000 - 160,000. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 4/2/2025.

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
