Job Description

Lead the software development department and use your software leadership skills to manage various teams to develop a wide range of industrial control products, engineering tools & integrated control systems for various businesses within Power Conversion & Solar UK, such as Offshore Marine, Naval, Industry and Oil & Gas.

  • Manage up to 25 software engineers & supporting functions within multiple teams, resolving day-to-day personnel issues and supporting their long-term career development.
  • Be responsible for all aspects of the development department, including on-time delivery of developments, Customer satisfaction, quality, budgets, compliance, adherence to Company safety & HR policies etc.
  • Work closely with Product Managers to define & implement the strategy for the development of Industrial control products & integrated automation systems for use by GE Power Conversion Businesses.
  • Manage teams developing products that include real-time Industrial controllers, Industrial communications protocols, Windows based HMIs, Windows based engineering tools and remote monitoring & diagnostic applications.
  • Working with the Business domain experts, define, develop and maintain control system architectures based on these products that meet specific industry requirements and that can be efficiently engineered on contracts. Application areas include Marine Dynamic Positioning Systems, Power Management Systems and Drive control systems.
  • Work with Program managers to manage allocated project budgets and monitor actual expenditures and costs against delivered benefits and agreed KPIs.
  • Report progress of projects at regular intervals within the development organization and to key stakeholders
  • Refine software development processes (inc IEC62443 SDLC) across the department to ensure both continuous improvement and consistency across the teams in areas such as quality, cyber security, coding practices, development technologies etc
  • Drive a continuous improvement culture including reuse, cooperation, knowledge management, lessons learned
  • Drive the development of the products and systems to achieve certification to recognised standards in areas such as cyber security (e.g. IEC 62443/NIST) and Integrity (e.g. IEC 61508/NIST)
  • Ensure that the technical choices made within the organisation and the skill sets of the engineers permit the products and systems to be maintained, upgraded and supported by the Service organisation over the lifetime of the supplied systems.
  • Liaise with equivalent development leaders and teams in India, France and Germany to co-ordinate resources, developments and processes across the different teams and to ensure that the resulting products and systems are compatible and adhere to common standards.

QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS

  • Degree, or equivalent, in software engineering or computer science
  • 10+ years' experience within a software engineering management role, or similar
  • Proven record of leadership of software teams in the development of complex products
  • Experience leading Agile programs, and knowledge of SDLC standards, such as IEC 62442 4-1
  • Awareness of cyber security principles when applied to software development, products and systems
  • Knowledge of product development, including awareness of applicable rules, regulations, customer standards, intellectual property rights, export control etc.
  • Ability to operate under pressure in a multi-skilled, multi-disciplinary environment, with many parallel activities.
  • Understanding of department management activities, such as HR processes, department budgets and general commercial processes
  • Ability to earn the respect of a diverse group of people, both internally within the department, as well as external stakeholders. From young inexperienced engineers to senior leaders of the Company.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Both verbally and via documents / emails / PowerPoints.
  • Management computer skills, such as use of project planning software (MS Project), Excel, PowerPoint etc.
  • Strong decision-making skills to be able to digest and process a wide range of information and to make and communicate clear decisions in a timely fashion and knowing when to escalate issues when appropriate.
  • Flexibility to be able to continuously monitor projects and technologies and to know when to change direction if things are not going as expected.
  • The successful candidate needs to be able to attain security clearance to work on Naval projects.
