As a Senior Electrical Designer, you will work on innovative transformer designs, collaborate with industry experts, and contribute to cutting-edge engineering solutions in power transformer design. You will have extensive experience in the design of power transformers and shunt reactors, with in-depth understanding of ISO, IEC, and IEEE standards. You will also be proficient in design failure analysis (DFMEA), root cause analysis (RCA), and FEA tools. You will travel regularly to manufacturing units, conferences, and customer sites.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Product development of Medium and Large Power Transformers as well as Shunt Reactors.
  • Lead and participate in design reviews, collaborating with cross-functional teams to address design challenges, risks, and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Apply DFMEA (Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis) to identify potential failure modes and enhance design robustness.
  • Ensure designs comply with all relevant industry standards and best practices, including, but not limited to, ISO, IEC, and IEEE.
  • Ensure components and assemblies meet applicable industry and business standards.
  • Use specialized software to analyze magnetic circuits, electromagnetic fields, insulation strength, and verify the electrical adequacy of products.
  • Promote PTR-wide initiatives focused on electrical design quality and reliability.
  • Support PTR quality initiatives with a significant emphasis on design robustness.
  • Develop and maintain solid business relationships and effective communication with suppliers to ensure their support and assist in the production of high-quality components.
  • Conduct failure analysis using RCA (Root Cause Analysis) to effectively resolve design-related issues.

Required Skills:

  • Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent professional experience.
  • Extensive, proven experience in transformer development and design.
  • In-depth knowledge of internal standards (ISO, IEC, IEEE, etc.) and industry best practices in transformer design.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools.
  • Extensive expertise in design failure analysis (DFMEA) and failure investigation using RCA (Root Cause Analysis).
  • Familiarity with FEA tools.
  • Ability to develop and optimize designs to meet customer requirements and comply with relevant regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams and engage with customers.
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills and a keen attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with transformer manufacturing processes.
  • Deep understanding of transformer operational performance, including mechanical and thermal aspects.
  • Experience working on international projects and collaborating in multi-disciplinary, cross-cultural teams.
  • Familiarity with methodologies for developing new technologies and products.

Lichfield Road manufacturing facility has been originally established in 1903 and has been standing since 1960 as a part of English Electric group, delivering power transformers, that later merged GEC Alsthom and later became ALSTOM, and has been acquired by GE in 2015. Stafford is ideally suited for research and advanced manufacturing with our highly skilled staff and position at the heart of the UK's transport network. GE is proud to be the largest employer in Stafford, with around 1,700 employees across multiple sites.

The transformer facility has been renowned all over the world with its expertise in design, manufacturing, and delivery of HVAC and HVDC transformers world-wide, up to 800kV.
