Role Summary/Purpose
At GE Vernova Advanced Research, scientists, engineers and technicians work to provide GE Vernova's businesses and strategic partners with technical innovations for their future generation products, processes and services. The Research Engineer opportunity helps early career individuals gain valuable hands-on industrial research experience and contribute meaningfully to advancement of technology in the areas of Electrification and Renewables. The opening is for candidates with a PhD. The role is designed to provide an enriching experience for the candidate by working side by side with experts in the field, completing complex technical projects, applying their theoretical knowledge to real-life technical problems, and developing skills in a cutting edge global environment. The program also includes seminars on cross-center technology and soft skills development as well as opportunities for networking and showcasing project accomplishments.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • As a Research engineer, you will:
    • Conduct power system research involving modeling and simulation of electrical components and networks, design of protection, stability, faults and controls, and test lab scale circuit
    • Simulate and analyze electrical power systems consisting of electromechanical systems, renewable generation, conventional generation and controls.
    • Develop algorithms for power system optimization, generation scheduling and dispatch for grid connected and microgrid systems
    • Develop and implement in hardware advanced controls of electrical system.
    • Collaborate with both GE Vernova product engineers and Advanced Research team members on technical projects
  • Write and orally represent the research to its business customers and at technical conferences
  • Work with multi-disciplinary boarder team or independently deliver based on the requirements of project
  • Deliver on technical projects with set timelines and cost
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of key business drivers and use this understanding to accomplish own work.
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
  • Use some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance. Use prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Have access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.
  • Have proven interpersonal skills and provide informal guidance to new team members

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with atleast 1 year of experience or a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field with at least 4 years of industry experience in an advanced technology development environment designing, building and testing power electronics and controls
  • Strong expertise in simulation and analysis of electrical systems and electro mechanical system
  • Understanding of grid energy management systems
  • Understanding of power system dynamics, transients, protection and controls
  • Hands-on hardware design and build experience in power systems experimental set-up
  • Experience in system simulation tools such as PSCAD, Matlab/Simulink etc.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as in collaborative team environment
  • Unfailing dedication to deadlines and commitments

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems. Ability to document, plan, market, and execute programs. Established project management skills.
  • Experience in Wind Electrical system, Converter, converter control and grid integration
  • Experience in power converter and control for high frequency high power applications
  • Experience in Python, C++, Visual Studio
  • Understanding of Signal Processing
  • Experience in Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) applications to Power Systems is an added advantage
