At Vernova Advanced Research, we invent and develop transformational technologies that will enable a clean and sustainable new era of energy. As a Research Engineer in Aerodynamics & Thermosciences, you will work in teams to developing technologies to improve aerodynamic and thermal performance of Vernova products, including and not limited to wind turbines, industrial gas turbines and nuclear reactors. You will perform simulations and support laboratory testing to demonstrate new technologies for Vernova businesses and United States government agencies.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

In this role, you will:

  • Independently execute tasks using your technical skills for projects in the fields of aerodynamics and heat transfer.
  • Work as part of a team executing on multi-generation technology programs to enable future design advancements.
  • Participate in high fidelity computational analyses.
  • Use both proprietary and commercial CFD and computational tools.
  • Participate in validation & verification efforts to advance computational methodologies and/or to demonstrate new technologies.
  • Develop ideas and concepts to improve component performance and operability.
  • Collaborate with Vernova business engineering teams to communicate and validate state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies.
  • Contribute to the development and writing of internal and external proposals.
  • Leverage and grow an external network of collaborators in academia, government, and industry.

Required Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in Mechanical, Energy, Energy Systems or related discipline OR Master's degree in Mechanical, Energy, Energy Systems or related discipline with a minimum of 5 years professional experience
  • Experience and knowledge of fluid mechanics, aerodynamics, heat transfer, and CFD. Experience in meshing & using engineering simulation/analysis tools (such as CFX or Fluent) to model turbomachinery flows
  • Ability to investigate, model and provide critical insight into complex physical flow phenomena
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Good communication skills and ability to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • Must be 18 years or older

Desired Characteristics:

  • At least 3 years of industrial or research experience in computational aero-thermal analysis
  • Demonstrated proficiency in meshing & using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), high-fidelity LES based approach and high performance computing
  • Excellent programming skills including expertise with FORTRAN, C++ and Python
  • Passion for science and technology and clear evidence of innovation and creativity
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

The salary range for this position is $85,600 - $130,000 USD, annually. The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's experience, their education, and the work location. This position is also eligible for a performance bonus. This position will remain posted until at least August 16th, 2024.
