Job Description Summary
Become part of a winning team and help to deliver the Green Energy transition.
The North and South Europe Grid System Integration (GSI) team is currently delivering a number of high voltage DC transmission projects, and is looking for a "HVDC - Verification and Validation" Engineer to join the team and focus on the project specific application of the HVDC technology.
These large and complex projects have many design elements and requirements, and it is critical that all the design work undertaken fully takes into account the complete range of needs and delivers a design that meets its functional objectives.
As a "Region HVDC - Verification and Validation Engineer", you will be responsible for reviewing the project application of the HVDC technology, across the project portfolio, and assessing whether it correctly meets the required quality, safety, customer and regulatory standards, and fully satisfies the operational needs of the Customer. Should any area of concern be identified, you will work closely with, and advise the design teams, on the best way to resolve the issue.

Job Description
Responsibilities
- The "Region HVDC - Verification and Validation Engineer", while being independent from the project team, will work with the engineering leader on each project to develop a specific design quality plan.
- This plan will define the actions 'hold points' where the "HVDC V&V Engineer" will review elements of the design and provide approval before proceeding to the next phase, along with the identification of any areas of risk or complexity that requires additional focus.
- These actions will be a mix of independent assessment of design information, and the attendance at key design reviews. In addition, the V&V Engineer shall advise the design team as the work progresses and investigate any non-conformances for the purpose of continuous improvement.
- This systematic approach shall be organised in a way to ensure that the design meets both the customer's specification, and it's required electrical, mechanical & environmental characteristics or parameters. It is also required to ensure it achieves its intended primary purpose or functional requirement, has alignment with other preceding or corresponding aspects of the design, and the work of the many disciplines are correctly interfaced with other.
- In addition to ensuring the design fulfils its operational requirements, it is essential to make sure it can be constructed in an efficient and practical manner, it contains all necessary provision to undertake the required maintenance activities, and contains the necessary safety systems to allow this to be done safely.
- Finally, all the design work undertaken shall, as far as reasonably practicable, be hazard free, and not present any risks to the operatives that will construct, operate, maintain and decommission it.
Qualifications & Experience:-
- A minimum of a Master's degree in Power Engineering or a related electrical engineering discipline. (Or a significant amount of relevant experience which can be considered as an equivalent).
- Have extensive and demonstrated experience working in a senior role where your daily activities are working in either the design, or reviewing, all aspects of HVDC Transmission projects.
You will have a strong working knowledge of the following topics from an application perspective:
- HVDC Station and Plant Design.
- HVDC Valve Hall Design and Layout.
- Auxiliary subsystem design (LVAC / Cooling Systems etc).
- System Studies.
- Control System Application.
You will also have a solid understanding of the following topics:
- The way in which HVDC stations are constructed, particularly in the case of brownfield sites, and how this requirement is supported within the design.
- The way in which HVDC stations are maintained and the facilities needed within the design to enable this maintenance to be performed in a safe and practical manner.
Desired Characteristics:-
- The successful candidate will be an experienced and proven HVDC design engineer who has been part of the successful delivery of a significant portfolio of projects.
- You will be familiar with the considerations of high voltage direct current engineering and the project specific adaptions needed to tailor them to meet specific Customer requirements.
- You will be comfortable reviewing designs, both as a desk-top exercise and also as an independent expert at design reviews, and be able to clearly articulate to the designers any areas where you consider adjustments or changes are required.
- You will be a team player, with good communication and interpersonal skills, be capable of self-management, and have a high degree of flexibility, resilience and a self-learning attitude.
