The Global Engineering Center Leader will drive innovation, oversee R&D initiatives, and ensure operational excellence across global teams to meet the evolving needs of the energy sector.
The Global Engineering Center Leader will work closely with senior leadership and Unit engineering leaders to align engineering strategies with business goals, foster collaboration across geographies, and cultivate a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
This is a hybrid role and requires onsite presence throughout the week.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities
- Leadership & Strategy: Lead and drive the strategic direction of the Global Engineering Center, ensuring alignment with the company's long-term objectives and vision.
- Research & Technology: Lead the research and technological development of next-generation power transformers, including materials, design improvements, energy efficiency, and smart grid technologies.
- Global Team Management: Manage a diverse, high-performance team of engineers across multiple locations, providing guidance, mentoring, and support for career development.
- Product Development: Oversee the development of power transformer products, from conceptualisation through design, prototyping, testing, and commercialisation, ensuring adherence to quality and safety standards.
- Operational Excellence: Oversee day-to-day operations of the engineering centre, ensuring efficient resource allocation, project execution, and delivery of high-quality results on time and within budget.
- Innovation & Technology: Spearhead the adoption of cutting-edge technologies, tools, and practices to maintain a competitive edge in the market. Foster a culture of continuous innovation and technical excellence within the team.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with senior executives, product managers, R&D, and other business functions to drive engineering initiatives that meet both market demands and business goals.
- Global Expansion: Identify opportunities for expanding the engineering footprint in new regions, establishing best practices for global operations, and leveraging regional strengths to maximise impact.
- Operational Excellence: Ensure efficient and effective operations within the global engineering center, managing budgets, resources, and timelines to optimise delivery of engineering projects and research outcomes.
- Risk Management & Compliance: Ensure all engineering projects comply with legal, regulatory, and industry standards while managing risks associated with technical, operational, and business challenges.
- Client Engagement: Interact with key clients and stakeholders to understand their needs and deliver customised engineering solutions that align with business objectives.
- Industry Leadership: Establish the organisation as a leader in power transformer technology by influencing industry standards, participating in technical forums, and engaging in collaborations with academic and research institutions.
- Quality, Safety & Compliance: Oversee the development and implementation of engineering best practices, ensuring that all products meet regulatory standards, safety protocols, and environmental sustainability guidelines.

Qualifications / Requirements / Desired characteristics:
- Extensively proven experience in engineering leadership, with an excellent track record in managing global teams and multi-site operations.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing engineering strategies aligned with corporate goals and industry trends.
- Extensive knowledge of engineering principles, technologies, and methodologies across various industries.
- Extensive experience in leading R&D initiatives within the power transformer sector, including innovation in transformer design, energy efficiency, and reliability testing.
- In-depth knowledge of power transformer technologies, design standards (IEC, ANSI, IEEE), materials science, and electrical systems integration.
- Exceptional strategic thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams.
- Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment while managing competing priorities.
- Experience with scaling engineering operations and driving innovation within a global context.
- Exceptional financial acumen with experience in budget management, resource allocation, and cost optimisation.
- Bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, or a related field. MBA or other advanced business degree is a plus.
- Fluency in English; proficiency in other languages is a plus.
- Ability to quickly assess and make recommendations (rapid problem solving) regarding issues.

Lichfield Road manufacturing facility has been originally established in 1903 and has been standing since 1960 as a part of English Electric group, delivering power transformers, that later merged GEC Alsthom and later became ALSTOM, and has been acquired by GE in 2015. Stafford is ideally suited for research and advanced manufacturing with our highly skilled staff and position at the heart of the UK's transport network. GE is proud to be the largest employer in Stafford, with around 1,700 employees across multiple sites.
The transformer facility has been renowned all over the world with its expertise in design, manufacturing, and delivery of HVAC and HVDC transformers world-wide, up to 800kV.
