Job Description Summary

GE Vernova Power Conversion & Storage (GEV-PC&S) Division provides electrical power conversion systems for Naval, industry, marine, and Oil & Gas applications. Typical scope includes medium and low voltage (MV & LV) power converters, motors, transformers, E-house, switchgear, and control as well as the associated power systems engineering.
The Power Electronics Engineer role is considered a lead role within the business and expected to be an individual with deep technical capability and hands-on experience / skills within power electronics converters with a strong emphasis on development and applications. The successful candidate is expected to take ownership of power converter designs, analyses, build / manufacturing and testing while supporting controls and software development, real time modeling and simulation to meet equipment, system and customer application requirements.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Lead development of advanced power converter projects from concept to the delivery of a fully validated solution that meets specified requirements.
  • Prepare detailed technical specifications for large industry, marine and naval power converters that capture customer requirements.
  • Serve as the customer facing technical lead or principal investigator on technology projects including but not limited to power conversion, power systems analysis, power systems control and energy storage system integration.
  • Design, select, specify, and validate critical power components (IGBTS, IGCTs, MOSFETS, Diodes, capacitors, gate drive circuits, analog circuits in switching environments, etc.).
  • Ensure that all designs and practices implement and foster a culture of safety, quality and value.
  • Develop component and system mock-ups and prototypes.
  • Provide technical leadership to personnel supporting the assigned project.
  • Work with a multi-disciplinary engineering development team that includes application engineering, power conversion design, controls engineering, mechanical design, converter and control hardware design, and product test / validation.
  • Document technical data generated by the assigned project consistent with engineering policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Develop and perform product validation test plans .
  • Work with external consultants and third parties to achieve certification of product designs (UL, CSA, CE, MIL, etc.).
  • Provide timely communications on significant issues or developments.
  • Participate in teams assigned to address organizational initiatives and generic issues.
  • Participate as a presenter or reviewer in technical and program reviews.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies, processes, and procedures.
  • Maintain ownership of all engineering artifacts associated with specific power converters on projects including drawings, bill of materials, specifications, test and commissioning procedures.
  • Interface with sourcing and purchasing to ensure suppliers products are meeting specifications.
  • Interface with the manufacturing and test departments to ensure the power converters prototyped or produced are fit for purpose.
  • Create models of the power electronics for use by power systems engineers for performing power system and power quality studies.
  • Support sales and business development by reviewing customer requirements and highlighting differences / gaps between those requirements and power converter capabilities.
  • Manage design reviews for power converters.
  • Collaborate with global GEV PC&S P&L organizations to understand power converter technologies produced at those factories that can be used to satisfy customers in North America.

Required Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in power electronics systems engineering from an accredited university OR Master's Degree in engineering from an accredited university with an emphasis in Power Electronics and a minimum of 6 years of experience in power electronics/power conversion.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an engineering capacity.

Desired Characteristics

  • Strong understanding of power electronics technologies (AC/DC,DC/DC & DC/AC) design.
  • Strong understanding of switching waveforms, power semiconductor losses and loss modeling.
  • Strong understanding of circuit design and applications in low and medium voltage converter designs such as transistor level design in gate cards and protection functions.
  • Experience in PCB design for minimal stray inductance and capacitance and EMI/EMC optimization.
  • PCB schematic capture and layout experience.
  • Experience in design of IGBT and Wideband Gap semiconductor based power converters and magnetic component design.
  • Experience in parallel and series implementation of power semiconductors for purposes of higher power and voltage converter design.
  • Deep understanding of the control of voltage source and current sourced power converters.
  • Deep domain knowledge of semiconductor devices (Thyristor and transistor based) and their application to large power converters.
  • Strong passion towards engineering excellence w.r.t attention to details, engineering mindset and systems knowledge in power electronics design and manufacturing.
