Working in a class-leading, multi-disciplinary team of engineers you will bring your extensive expertise in Functional Safety engineering within the field of military projects and equipment, ideally with knowledge of relevant military standards, class rules and regulatory requirements.

As part of this role, you will support various projects, leading and producing Functional Safety Plans and deliverables, as well as supporting and conducting Functional Safety analysis.

You will have responsibility for the following activities:

  • Coordinating Functional Safety aspects across various projects to ensure a consistency of approach across the business.
  • Capturing and analysis of Functional Safety requirements for new projects.
  • Creating Functional Safety Management Plans (FSMP) and project philosophy documents to support functional safety, where necessary.
  • Ensuring compliance with the relevant safety standards on projects.
  • Creating/reviewing & maintaining Hazard Analysis and Risk Assessments.
  • Developing/reviewing Functional Safety concepts & Technical safety concepts
  • Analysing and defining Safety requirements (Functional Safety requirements and Technical safety requirements) for projects and equipment.
  • Conducting Safety analyses (e.g. FTA, FMEA, HAZOP)
  • Leading technical discussions with suppliers & customers on Functional Safety.
  • Conducting and supporting functional safety audits and assessments.
  • Development of safety plans and safety justifications where required for projects.
  • Supporting the project teams and our suppliers, by providing direction, guidance and mentoring, to produce our Safety deliverables.
  • Working with the wider engineering and Product Safety teams in support of Safety Hazard Identification and Safety and Risk Management.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum of a degree or equivalent qualification, or higher, for example Masters or PhD, in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Certified Functional Safety Engineer with demonstrable Functional Safety knowledge.
  • Previous experience of delivering Functional Safety documentation.
  • Experience of functional safety analysis techniques, including, but not limited to, conducting FMEA, FTA, FMEDA, HARA activities.
  • Experience of working with functional safety standards.
  • Experience with safety planning tools.
  • Is a sole UK National and holds, or be eligible to obtain, UK security clearance to SC level.

Desired characteristics

  • Experience within the UK Defence sector, in particular with the UK Royal Navy.
  • Knowledge of military and/or defence standards.
  • Chartered (or working to) or equivalent with a recognised institution, with a proven record of continuous professional development.
  • Knowledge of classification rules, e.g. DNV, ABS, Lloyds for marine.
  • Ability to multi-task on a variety of projects to strict timescales, excellent communication skills, good report writing skills, well organised.
  • Hold a UK Driving Licence and be willing to travel within base country and overseas for short-term working.
