Job Description Summary

In this role, the Lead Mechanical Engineer will develop design specifications, create, and mature design concepts, provide procurement support, generate drawings and design documentation, and provide testing oversight. This position requires interface with Business Project Managers, Technical Project Engineers, Sourcing, Equipment Manufacturers, as well as internal and partner company engineering teams.

Responsible for Mechanical Component Design activities that support:
• Advanced Nuclear (Generation III+ and Generation IV / Sodium Fast Reactor technologies)
• Advanced Applications Engineering

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • All design engineers demonstrate accountability for cost, schedule, quality, and technical accuracy of assigned tasks. Demonstrated personal responsibility and ability to understand design impact and associated risks are a must. We must be able to consider customer needs and maintain open communication with interfacing engineers and project stakeholders.
  • Responsible for writing and maintaining equipment requirement specifications and drawings.
  • Develop the design of mechanical components and equipment.
  • Provide evaluation and assistance in selection of vendors.
  • Support vendor manufacturing (respond to questions/requests, review submittals, witness tests).
  • Create and execute the design, test, and/or integration required to develop plant reactor vessels, functional containment/confinement vessels, reactor structural support components, and other ASME equipment that meet business standards and program / product requirements.
  • Performance of fundamental engineering hand calculations and modeling.
  • Assess failure modes, causality, and risk.
  • Prepare and present design reviews and technical reports to internal and external customers.
  • Lead/facilitate discussion and information exchange to promote open dialogue including working effectively in a matrixed team environment.
  • Lead and work with cross-functional (other teams providing same discipline engineering service), cross-discipline (other teams developing interfacing technologies), and cross-organizational (customer and supplier) teams to develop conforming design solutions.
  • Prepare invention disclosures to protect the technology and intellectual property that provides a competitive advantage to the business.
  • Participate in and lead teams assigned to address specific organizational initiatives.
  • Identify and take the initiative to resolve design and organizational challenges.
  • Develop less experienced mechanical design engineers through coaching and feedback.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent engineering discipline from an accredited university or college (or degree professional with 5 years of nuclear experience).
  • 3 years of experience in heavy industrial, thermal power, or nuclear industry working in mechanical equipment and component design, including specification of design requirements, design development, procurement, test, and fabrication/installation support.
  • 3 years of knowledge, skill and experience with PC and desktop engineering productivity software (e.g.; Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio), various 3D computer aided design (CAD) or analysis and modeling tools as well as project collaboration tools (Confluence, PLM, Doors Next Generation).

Eligibility Requirements:

  • This role is restricted to U.S. persons (i.e., U.S. citizens, permanent residents, and other protected individuals under the Immigration and Naturalization Act, 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)) due to access to U.S. export-controlled technology. GE will require proof of U.S. person status prior to employment.
  • Preferred work location is GE Hitachi Nuclear headquarters in Wilmington NC, but highly qualified remote (US Based) candidates will be considered.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Knowledge of applicable industry standards/codes (e.g. ASME BPVC Section III/VIII/XI).
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Inventor 3D CAD design.
  • Knowledge of Geometric Design & Tolerancing (GD&T) practices.
  • Proficiency with ANSYS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) analysis.
  • Proven understanding of mechanical engineering principles including heat transfer, fluid dynamics, statics and dynamics.
  • Master's degree in an engineering or technical discipline.
  • Prior experience in nuclear or other highly regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of quality standards and systems (e.g., NQA-1 and ISO 9000)
  • Experience analyzing and solving moderately complex design problems.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to write organized engineering documents.
  • Strong interpersonal and proven leadership skills.

The base pay range for this position is $86-122k. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for bonuses, such as a performance bonus/variable incentive compensation/equity. This position is expected to close on 8/19/2024.

The company pays a geographic differential of 110%, 120%, or 130% of salary in certain areas.
