Job Description Summary

The Lead Communications Engineer will be a team player, contributing to the ongoing delivery of existing product solutions, and the development of new products, focused on Communication protocols. The task is full cycle, from the specification of new solutions, through to test and delivery.
It is envisaged that the role will develop to cover aspects of Electrical / Electronic and Firmware Development.

Qualification

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or Computer Science or Communications from an accredited university
  • Minimum 7-8 years of experience in communication domain.
  • Good writing and oral communication skills

Essential Requirements

  • System level thinking to propose Communication solutions to bespoke customer projects
  • Hardware Specification e.g. RTUs, IEDs, Switches
  • Point mapping across protocols to support product development
  • Communication System Architectures/Topologies e.g. multi-drop circuits
  • Deployment approach e.g. twisted pair, fibre optic, wireless
  • Specification of sub-station protocols e.g. DNP3, IEC61850
  • Understanding of communication protocols such as DNP3, IEC 61850, RS-232, RS-485, Ethernet, and Modbus TCP
  • Client/Server Architectures for communication between substations and control rooms
  • Connection and Interconnection Wiring Diagrams
  • Provide support in system acceptance testing and validation activities, both on and offsite - FAT and SAT
  • Support of customer technical issues
  • Ultimate definition and delivery of a Communications lifecycle, formalising development from requirements capture, through to automated test
  • good programming experience in C or C++, familiarity with software configuration management tools, defect tracking tools, and peer review.
  • Basic electrical experience on Communication physical layers
  • Ability to follow Schematic diagrams to assist in test and implementation
  • Ability to write comprehensive technical design documentation relating to Communication implementations

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience with Power Utility scale SCADA system development and design
  • Automation expertise (Python)
  • Understanding of RTOS concepts, from simple round robin to layered pre-emptive.
  • Ability to understand and minimally modify assembler.
  • Experience of Embedded Linux implementations and environments.
  • Experience of modern programming languages (for example C#)
  • Strong communications skills, with a proven ability to work successfully within a geographically distributed team.
  • Ability to demonstrate delivery to time, quality, and budget within an Agile programming environment.
  • Experience in secure code development - cyber security
  • Experience of reading schematics and data sheets to assist in software / hardware debug
