Essential Responsibilities
- Lead the definition and assessment of future BMS system architectures specifically for grid-scale Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Create high-level functional product specifications based on grid requirements, safety standards, and the need for seamless integration with diverse battery technologies.
- Develop comprehensive architecture views of relevant BMS software and hardware components for BESS applications.
- Benchmark different BMS architectures and explore design options to optimize cost, performance, power, and size for our product portfolio.
- Design and develop advanced BMS control algorithms for optimal battery performance, safety, and longevity in grid-connected systems.
- Define specifications and requirements for the overall battery system within our BESS portfolio, ensuring safe integration of various battery chemistries.
- Lead the development and integration of BMS software that controls battery operation within our grid-connected systems.
- Ensure the BMS design facilitates the safe and efficient integration of our proprietary technologies into different battery types used in our BESS portfolio.
- Lead the analysis of potential innovation areas at the system, architecture, and software levels, focusing on advancements relevant to grid-scale energy storage.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards, regulations, and grid interconnection requirements for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Collaborate with firmware/software teams to program chargers and battery fuel gauges for grid applications.
- Support the development team in the implementation and seamless integration of the BMS software with our management systems.
- Stay at the forefront of the latest advancements in battery technology, BMS architectures, and grid energy storage standards.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or a related field
- Minimum of 10 years of experience within system engineering and product design in battery management systems, with a strong focus on grid-scale energy storage applications.
- Expert knowledge and demonstrated experience in BMS for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).
- Prior experience working with utilities, energy storage developers, or grid operators in defining, implementing, or supporting Battery Management Systems is highly desired.
- Strong understanding of grid interconnection standards, power grid dynamics, and renewable energy integration
- Experience with communication protocols relevant to grid integration (e.g., Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850).
- Knowledge of relevant safety standards for BESS (e.g., UL 9540, NFPA 855, IEC 62933).
Desired Characteristics
- Direct experience in microcontroller programming and embedded systems relevant to BMS.
- Familiarity with battery management algorithms and their interaction with hardware, firmware, application platform systems, and manufacturing practices.
- Comprehensive understanding of the detailed workings of different battery chemistries relevant to grid storage (e.g., Lithium-ion, Sodium-ion, etc.) and their limitations.
- Ability to work effectively in cross-functional teams comprising experts in battery technology, grid operations, and software engineering.
- Self-driven attitude with a strong business acumen and a passion for advancing grid-scale energy storage.
- Readiness to travel for customer meetings and internal team meetings as required.
- Master's degree in electrical engineering with a specialization in power systems or energy storage.
- Experience with simulation and modeling tools for battery and grid systems (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
