Workplace Classification:

Hybrid : This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary work location three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Team:

General Motors IT has established Technology Development/Innovation Centers globally and is focused on creating an exciting environment that motivates and challenges professionals technically. We are actively seeking Site Reliability Engineers to join the team and provide a range of services to our global organization.

The Role:

A Virtualization Systems Engineer will operate, monitor & administrate IT equipment & environments. This includes monitoring, performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and implementing corrective actions in support of continuing operations of the VMware Platform. While this role focuses on the VMware VSphere technology, a wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected as well as the desire to learn, utilize the tools, processes and develop the organizational agility needed to maintain and provide maximum availability and reliability of our product for our customers.

Candidates require good communication skills and the ability to demonstrate comfort, interest and aptitude for learning and manipulating technology platforms. This position will manage multiple priorities effectively, work independently and thoroughly assess written content. Ideal candidates will display knowledge in ITIL and service orientation, have a strong aptitude in problem-solving and be able to work virtually within global teams while innovating and completing projects and tasks under tight deadlines. Work will largely be guided through service requests and coordination with the release management team.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities):

  • Proficiency in service-level changes to systems and troubleshooting components.
  • Perform configuration, service, incident, and problem management functions.
  • Perform change, release, security, patch, and certificate management activities.
  • Engineer and deploy enhancements to production and non-production systems.
  • Work with teams to manage the agreed upon SLA's.
  • Work with teams to improve the reporting & operational policies and procedures.
  • Participate in off-duty or on-call work as required in a rotation.

Additional Description

What You'll Need (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems or other related discipline. Equivalent work experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • A thorough operational understanding of Virtualization, ESXi, Vcenter, Vrops, Vproxy, NSX, and SRM products within the vSphere platform with experience supporting varying configurations including the ability to document procedures, runbooks, and environments.
  • Background in working to maintain the highest degree of security implementations as well as proactive mitigation of vulnerabilities.
  • Solid troubleshooting and debugging skills in a high-pressure environment working with application, network, security, and development teams.
  • Experience with X86 Hardware, Bios, Drivers, Active Directory, DNS, Chef, NAS/SAN, SSL.

People Skills:

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with customers and support teams to identify and drive SLAs/SLOs, Resiliency, and Performance.
  • Ability to analyze situations, speak up respectfully, and share innovative ideas.
  • Strong work ethic in a mission-critical 24x7x365 diverse environment with multiple vendor/customer relationships.
