Work Arrangement:

Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to one of the following locations: Milford, MI (Preferred) or Warren, MI you are expected to report to that location three times a week, at minimum.

Our Embedded Platforms Infrastructure team is a dynamic, high-energy, and innovative group focused on building the software platforms that underpins how controller safety, communications, cybersecurity, memory, over-the-air programming and power management functions across the electronics portfolio of all our vehicles. We are looking for a talented and motivated candidate to join our team in our journey of defining and executing our next generation Vehicle Electrical Architecture. The Embedded Platform Infrastructure Systems Engineering organization is looking for a Staff Systems Engineer that will lead the development of System Safety architecture utilized by all GM's platforms.

The Role:

In this role, you are expected to have technical proficiency for developing the strategy for implementing Mechatronics Infrastructure System Safety by aligning stakeholders, requirements, test cases, designs, and delivering a product that exceeds our customers' expectations. You will also be expected to train and develop analysis capabilities of other engineers and provide technical leadership to engineers to perform ongoing analysis work in support of our future vehicle architecture. This team will interface across various GM engineering disciplines as well as external engineering to obtain needed information for required safety analysis work.

What You'll Do:

  • Near term - Champion implementation strategy of Safety within Mechatronics Infrastructure, create architecture requirements and test cases for implementation in Mechatronics Infrastructure, create test strategy to ensure all system safety functions can be tested to meet objectives, and collaborate with System Safety Engineers, ECU hardware experts, software implementation teams, and hardware teams to ensure safety cases for microprocessors, ASICs, ECUs, and infrastructure related to application system safety cases.
  • Long term - Drive industry standardization of functional safety requirements and design, develop process, identify pertinent training, and help build, train and technically lead a team of Safety System Engineers to evaluate and validate infrastructure software
  • Lead functional decomposition, interface definition and DFMEA for safety system functions.
  • Lead testing and validation initiatives to ensure proper functionality and performance.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including our Tier 1s, to ensure seamless integration of mechatronics system safety into the overall vehicle architecture.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation, including system specifications, decomposition diagram, test plans, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Provide advice and technical mentoring to other team members and promote a team environment that values the backgrounds, opinions, and ideas of everyone.
  • Collaborate with team to continuously improve processes, methodologies, and tools.
  • Stay up to date with the latest industry standards, protocols, and trends related to system safety.
  • Proficiently use issue tracking and workload tasking / change management (eg: JIRA) tools to document and drive design changes and issue resolution.

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related experience.
  • 8+ years experience in Systems Engineering and experience planning, designing, and implementing System Safety requirements.
  • Five or more years ofembedded software development.
  • In-depth familiarity with ISO 26262 and other functional safety standards such as IEC 61508, IEC 62304, or DO-178C.
  • Advanced understanding of network troubleshooting tools.
  • Deep knowledge of safety critical embedded controls with at least one automotive subsystem or experience with a complex safety system in other industries.
  • Knowledge of software development lifecycle and testing methodologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to ideate, formulate and execute winning technical strategies and innovations.
  • Demonstrated leadership and project management of complex technical projects.
  • Ability to provide technical leadership and mentorship to diverse global teams.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Master of Science in Systems Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Math, or related experience.
  • 10+ years experience in Systems Engineering and experience planning, designing, and implementing System Safety requirements.
  • A proven history of designing and implementing System Safety Standards.
  • Familiarity with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) practices.
  • Experience working with safety diagnostic monitors.
  • Machine learning, simulation methods and data acquisition.
