Workplace Classification:

Hybrid: This means the successful candidate is expected to report to their primary location (Milford, MI) three times per week, at minimum, or other frequency dictated by the business.

Our Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) team is on the forefront of this work, emboldening our culture by seeking out determined, innovative individuals who will join our team to help move us forward and achieve our mission.

We are looking for a high-performing self-driven Software & Controls Architect to support and guide the broader Vehicle Motion Embedded Controls (VMEC) team. As we expand our core software competency in our newly aligned organization, we are placing an increased value on the Software Architecture responsibilities. This includes software requirements, design, construction, testing, maintenance, quality and computing foundations. This role will provide strategic leadership in these areas across the PHEV organization along with tactical support.

What You'll Do:

  • Define Software and Controls Architecture for General Motors PHEV programs

    • Understand high-level objectives
    • Understand the key physics
    • Develop plant models for controls
    • Confirm key physics are captured
    • Develop controls designs that can be communicated to software development teams
  • Work with Mechatronics, Systems, and Engineering Technical fellows, Lead Software Architects, and Lead Solution Architects to explore, plan, define, and support the implementation of enablers as required for the successful launch of General Motors PHEV programs.
  • Developing the architectural framework and Controls Strategies for PHEV, across Value Streams, with collaboration with the Systems and Engineering technical fellows.
  • Define and lead corporate software strategy for PHEVs, including highly complex features or significant enhancements for current, new, or major programs.
  • Establish Software Non-Functional Requirements (NFRs) and participate in the definition of the NFRs for the other System Architect variants.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies; Support establishing the Value Stream technology roadmap; ensure alignment with corporate vision, strategic themes, and program timing.
  • Validate technological assumptions, evaluate implementation alternatives working across organization and technological boundaries to converge on a final solution plan
  • Work closely with teams of highly skilled engineering professionals to solve cross-functional design issues and deliver top-quality products to the end user, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Periodic rationalization of software component ownership in accordance with Conway's Law
  • Identify, define and drive Software Architecture Best practices across Value Streams.
  • Actively Engage in driving efficiency in software, collaborate with Software System Architects to improve build-in quality and pay down technical debts. Focus on continuous improvement of designs to drive common best practices and efficient algorithms.
  • Work with the System and Solution Architects to explore, plan, define, and support the implementation of enablers required to evolve solution intent and support PHEV features and capabilities (Architectural Runway).

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):

  • BS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Aerospace Engineering required.
  • 7+ years of experience in automotive embedded software development with C/C++ , 3+ years of experience in architecting embedded systems with design strategies and principles
  • 5+ years experience in classical & modern controls design engineering

    • Plant model and System Identification
    • Frequency- and Time-based Analysis
    • Feedforward Control Model Development
    • Feedback Control Method Application
    • Tuning of Models and Feedback System
  • Good understanding of software development best practices
  • Proficiency in embedded controls and software architecture
  • Experience successfully leading activities/projects with high levels of ambiguity
  • Highly developed oral and written communications skills; ability to communicate intent to leadership and technical details to executing teams.
  • Strong analytical problem-solving skills, including independent judgment and decision-making skills, where problems are complex and conflicting requirements.
  • Proven ability in project management skills and ability to teach others.
  • Experience with the GM embedded software development tool chain.

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • MS in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Electrical Engineering, preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience in automotive embedded software development with C/C++ , 3+ years of experience in architecting embedded systems with design strategies and principles
  • Experience with architecture design, controller resource utilization reduction, or training.
  • Familiarity with SDV Architecture
