This role is categorized as on-site. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Liuzhou & Shanghai, China five times per week.

The Role

The Export Director is responsible for overseeing the export operations and strategy of the Joint Venture. This role involves managing international sales (both SUP, SKD and CKD), building relationships with overseas partners, ensuring compliance with global business & safety regulations, and driving business growth in foreign export markets. The Export Director will lead a team and work closely with other departments with SGMW and the GM markets to ensure smooth and profitable export activities.

What You'll Do

Lead a team of export professional and act as key interface and liaison team between GMM, GMI markets and SGMW to develop portfolio opportunity, execute successful project, in order to maximize GM Enterprise Value. Export Vehicle Program Management Director at SGMW will play a pivotal role in the development and execution of export vehicle programs from concept to production. Vehicle programs includes complete built vehicles, CKDs, SKDs and relevant aftersales parts (and accessories, where applicable). This position will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of vehicle program management, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and coordination with cross-functional (and cross-geographical) teams to ensure successful program delivery.

The position will work closely with the Director of OBEC (SGMW's Export Department) and supported by a team (of SGMW full-time employees) while carrying out its responsibilities.

  • Strategy
  • Accountable for a SGMW Exports business area, responsible for developing and implementing business strategies within the JV organization. This role typically involves leading other managers (as well as working cross functionally), and occasionally individual contributors, while providing clear strategic vision and direction to the team.
  • Ability to exert managerial influence beyond own department (eg. Finance, Planning, Quality, Manufacturing, Purchasing etc), develop, plan, and own the delivery of key performance indicators and strategic initiatives that directly impact functional outcomes and support the broader organizational strategy
  • Develop market fact-base and export and competitor intelligence
  • Develop SGMW export strategy jointly with GM Markets
  • Lead the planning and execution of vehicle programs, ensuring alignment with company objectives, timelines, and budgets
  • Business Development
  • Identify, evaluate, and prioritize initiatives within the portfolio to align with strategic goals and maximize impact.
  • Advocate for program studies by providing guidance and leadership to ensure comprehensive analysis and informed decision-making.
  • Lead complex commercial negotiations, balancing stakeholder interests while securing favorable outcomes for the organization.
  • Responsible for organizing Annual SGMW Export Summit
  • Execution
  • Possesses extensive knowledge of organizational practices and broad management experience across various functional areas, often spanning multiple departments. Exercising independent judgment in making professional and managerial decisions on Export programs (including making recommendations).
  • Ability to builds and manages teams, often overseeing multiple teams, by ensuring an optimal blend of talent and experience. Drives performance and champions large-scale change management, embodying and promoting the behaviors necessary to maintain a productive and cohesive team environment without compromising individuality and diversity. Leads teams in executing portfolio and volume plans and drives the achievement of results.
  • Develop and maintain program schedules, identifying critical milestones and dependencies to ensure on-time delivery
  • Manage program budgets, tracking expenditures and providing regular updates to senior management
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize program efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Support and coordinate program execution for successful launch
  • Align and enhance business operation processes
  • Monitor GM China export operation targets
  • Develops and refines policies and processes within Exports management, ensuring best practices are identified, evaluated, and implemented where appropriate. Provides strategic advice to senior leadership on processes and products that directly influence the organization's outcomes.
  • Stakeholders Management
  • Collaborates with senior leaders to develop and implement strategic plans and objectives, taking full accountability for the execution and effectiveness of program plans. Provides a long-term perspective and lead in high-impact, cross-functional projects with significant organizational visibility.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve issues and mitigate risks that may impact program delivery
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams, including engineering, design, manufacturing, supply chain, and quality, to drive program success.
  • Communicate program status, updates, and key decisions to stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Leadership
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, collaboration, and accountability within the program team.

Additional Description

  • Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, business administration, or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Proven experience in export program management within the automotive industry, with a focus on vehicle development programs
  • Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive consensus in a JV environment.
  • Strategic outlook - ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously and deliver results in a fast-paced environment, Business Development or Corporate Development experience is a plus
  • Ability to make quick decisions independently with limited supervisions
  • Adequate understanding of automotive engineering, manufacturing processes, and quality standards
  • Strong Chinese and English oral and written communication skills to be able to independently lead discussions with Chinese partners and global GM/foreign partners
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency in project management tools and software.
  • Passion for the automotive industry and a strong interest in emerging technologies and trends shaping the future of mobility
  • Dynamic personality and able to lead/energize teams
  • GM experience or familiarity with GM would be useful
  • Self-starter and takes initiative in leading/driving activities
  • General IT proficiency, e.g. familiarity with MS Office computer such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
