Work Arrangement: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the office three times per week or other frequency dictated by the business.

The Role

As a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, explore new technology areas, and establish technical plans. You will conduct research, simulations, and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas. You'll also write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research.

We need your help to develop novel battery systems and propulsion architectures including thermal management systems incorporating the next generation of advanced battery cells. This will require the synthesis of optimal pack/module/cell specifications using electromechanical/thermal principles. In selected cases, we will prototype such novel cells/modules/packs in proof-of-concept hardware to demonstrate satisfactory operation in extreme and challenging conditions. Such proof-of-concept hardware is targeted at applications such as race cars/trucks, extreme fast-charging packs, plug-in hybrids and even satellites and rovers for space.

What You'll Do

  • Develop next-generation technologies for advanced electric propulsion systems, with a focus on battery systems and propulsion system architecture
  • Develop and execute technical plans, including concept generation, development, and evaluation
  • Lead technical discussions and reviews as a technical specialist
  • Maintain state-of-the-art knowledge in related areas of responsibility.
  • Communicate ideas, plans and results effectively via presentations and written reports
  • Coordinate efforts between peers, management, operations groups, and outside organizations

Additional Description

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical, Electrical, or Energy Systems Engineering
  • 2+ years of research, postdoc or industry experience
  • Knowledge in electric propulsion system architecture
  • Knowledge in battery systems including pack/module/cell
  • Knowledge in battery thermal management systems
  • Excellent sociability in working with both internal and external customers

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with building and controlling modules/packs comprised of advanced battery cells preferred
  • 5+ years' experience of post Ph.D. work
  • Experience in electric propulsion architecture optimization
  • Experience in battery system synthesis/analysis
  • Experience in architecting and building high voltage electric propulsion systems
