The Role:
The Low Voltage Battery Lab Technician specializes in the safe and orderly preparation and testing of 12/48V batteries and related components within a laboratory environment. This work enables new technology introduction and improved quality, durability and performance of electrified vehicles and related products developed by General Motors.
This job is based at the General Motors Technical Center complex in Warren, Michigan. Our battery testing facility operates 24/7 with only one shift of personnel. The facility has battery testing capabilities including traditional environmental testing as well as exploratory development testing on cutting edge GM-invented new technologies. The lab and results it produces are used by other GM engineers working on advanced battery technologies and electrified vehicles, in support of the vision of a world with Zero Crashes, Zero Emissions and Zero Congestion.

This role is a good fit for a qualified individual who is interested in the growing field of vehicle electrification and the state-of-the-art battery technologies, and the associated development and testing methods.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities):
- Responsible for the development and execution of new Battery technology testing.
- Hands-on lead acid and/or Li-Ion battery testing.
- Hands-on electrical system debugging.
- Hands-on setup of programmable loads and power supplies.
- Champion safe test setup for battery assemblies and related components. This includes defining and performing procedures and checks to ensure test results are delivered on-time and with quality and with quality prior to bench release.
- Interface with Electric Power new technology project technical leads, and other GM and external experts to define and execute new, world class test procedures.
- Engage with Engineering and After Sales Service teams to develop test procedures and ensure all applicable tools tested and ensured to accurately represent the state of the battery and the needs of service personnel.
- Develop and manufacture special purpose instrumentation, cable and wiring assemblies, laboratory test equipment, and fixtures related to testing of battery assemblies or related components.
- Participate in battery teardown activities.
- Responsible for analysis of test results and summarizing findings in the form of teardown reports, graphs, etc.
- Responsible for data sharing, and maintenance of records on work performed including data collected or analyzed (test procedures, plans and reports) at the shareable site.
- Communicate and report out test conclusions in the form of reports and presentations.
- Develop, implement, and sustain workplace organization practices as it relates to logistics and material handling.
- Perform physical duties involving 12/48V batteries including movement, shipping, and disposal.
- Strong awareness of and experience with Safety needs when connecting and disconnecting mid-voltage batteries, APMs and programmable devices into an electrical system.
Additional Description
What You'll Need (Required Qualifications):
- Associates degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or relevant discipline.
- 3+ years related work experience.
- Thorough knowledge of complex mechanical and/or electrical concepts, including reading engineering drawings and schematics.
- Working knowledge of test automation applications used in a laboratory environment.
- Competence with typical office computer applications, e.g. Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook.
People Skills:
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Skills)
- Bachelors degree in Physics, Mechanical or Electrical Engineering.
- Knowledge of Lead Acid and Li-Ion Battery systems and safe work practices.
- Experience with laboratory test equipment, measuring and recording devices.
- Knowledge of electrical and electronics diagnostics and repair.
- Mounting and cooling experience with mid-voltage batteries, APMs and programmable devices.
- Experience with measurement techniques, sensor technologies and data collection devices (e.g. NEOVI or other DAQs) to create non- or minimally intrusive measurement storage.
- Knowledge of and experience with battery, APM, programmable devices, and system level debugging.
- Knowledge of and experience with common battery and APM test procedure coding and interpretation of results.
- MATLAB, LABVIEW, and PYTHON programming.
- Arduino programming experience.
