This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren or Detroit on a full-time basis.

Overview:

General Motors Global Security is seeking an Explosive Detection Canine (K9) handler to join our Tactical Response Team.

The Explosive Detection K9 handler partners with a trained Explosive Detection Canine, to conduct searches in/at assigned GM facilities, which include corporate buildings, factories, loading docks, delivery vehicles, open areas and/or other situations as needed. In addition to meeting the job K9 handler job requirements this individual will also perform the duties of a Tactical Response Team (TRT) member, who responds to high-threat situations by employing tactical teamwork to protect people and contain or resolve the incident.

You will play a critical role in maintaining the safety of our employees, facilities and others while working in dynamic environments.

Responsibilities:

  • Safely handle and care for an explosive detection canine, ensuring their health, ongoing training, and well-being. Note: The assigned canine must be permitted to either live inside the employee's residence or must have adequate outdoor climate-controlled shelter for the canine. The canine living area at the employee's residence is subject to reoccurring inspections by canine unit supervisor.
  • Perform weekly training exercises to maintain the canine's detection proficiency.
  • Complete detailed reports of activities, findings, and incidents.
  • Collaborate with GM facilities operations, GM security personnel, and GM management teams as needed.
  • Provide security driving services as needed for Senior Executives. Must be willing to operate company vehicle.
  • Must be willing to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays and at times subject to recall.
  • Preserve order and enforce security regulations and directives pertaining to the worksite, personnel and visitors.
  • Respond to emergency incidents including, but not limited to, active shooter/assailant, violent or mentally ill subjects, medical situations and bomb threats.
  • Conduct foot and/or vehicle patrols to ensure the safety and security of the worksite
  • Observe, report and respond to incidents at assigned worksite.
  • Secure incident and/or crime scenes and preserve evidence as required.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with General Motors personnel, visitors, and the public.

Additional Description

Qualifications:

  • Must have (3) years of documented experience as an Explosives Detection Canine handler with a background in Law Enforcement, Military or Corporate Security.
  • Possess and maintain a recognized Explosives Detection Canine handler certification (USPCA, ATF, or equivalent).
  • Valid State of Michigan driver's license and a clear driving record for the last three years and have no alcohol related driving convictions.
  • Must pass a criminal history check, background investigation, psychological examination, medical screening and subject to continued random drug testing and alcohol testing.
  • Concealed Pistol License (CPL) or Law Enforcement Officer Safety Act (LEOSA) certification.
  • Willing to work all shifts, including weekends, holidays and at times subject to recall.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions and varied environments.
  • Capable of handling a canine in physically demanding situations.
  • Able to lift and carry items weighing up to 80 lbs.
  • Able to sit, walk, run, climb stairs, squat, stretch, bend and kneel for long periods of time while handling a canine.
  • Must pass an annual physical fitness test (MCOLES pre-employment test).
  • Must qualify with a handgun, shotgun and tactical carbine in accordance with Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) active-duty firearms standard.
  • Must maintain basic first aid and CPR certifications.
  • Must maintain all job-related certifications and licenses (current PA 330 Certification preferred).
