Work Arrangement:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to GM's Global Technical Center in Warren, Michigan or The Renaissance Center in Detroit, Michigan three times per week at a minimum.

The Head of Instructional Design will coach and support a growing team of instructional designers and facilitators to create high-quality, evidence-based learning experiences for our employees. This role is a key member of the Global Talent team and reports directly to the Head of Global Learning and Development.
What You'll Do:
- Leadership and Team Management: Provide strategic leadership, guidance, and mentorship to the instructional design and facilitation team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work environment. Set clear expectations, assign projects, and ensure the team's professional development.
- Instructional Design and Facilitation Strategy: Create a vision and strategy to improve the quality and effectiveness of the learning experience at General Motors. Develop and implement instructional design and facilitation standards, processes, templates, and branding that align with business objectives and enhance the effectiveness of learning programs.
- Solution Architecture: Collaborate with cross-functional teams to architect innovative solutions and create prototypes that demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of instructional designs. Play a key role in the scoping process, ensuring that instructional projects are strategically aligned and instructionally sound from the outset.
- Stakeholder Collaboration: Collaborate with key stakeholders, including subject matter experts, program managers, heads of functional learning, and business leaders, to identify training needs, define learning objectives, and gather content for instructional design projects.
- Learning Program Development: Oversee the design, development, and facilitation of engaging and interactive learning solutions that enable behavior change and business outcomes. These solutions include e-learning modules, instructor-led training materials, job aids, multimedia assets, and cutting-edge technology, using instructional design principles and industry best practices.
- Technology Integration: Stay updated on instructional technologies, learning management systems (LMS), authoring tools, and AI to ensure the effective integration of technology into learning programs and enhance the learning experience.
- Needs Assessment and Evaluation: Utilize data from needs assessments and evaluations conducted by Learning Advisors and Program Managers to inform the scope and design of learning programs. Ensure that the instructional design and facilitation strategies are data-driven and aligned with identified performance gaps.
- Project Management: Partner with project managers to ensure timely development and delivery, adherence to quality standards, and effective communication with project stakeholders. Monitor project progress and allocate resources effectively.
- Industry Trends and Best Practices: Stay informed about emerging trends, technologies, and best practices in instructional design and facilitation. Apply this knowledge to enhance the effectiveness and innovation of learning programs.
- Management Responsibilities: This position will have approximately 10-15 direct reports. Manages staff and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Additional responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
Additional Description
Your Skills and Abilities: (Required)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience.
- Minimum of 2+ years of experience leading project teams.
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in the learning and development field.
- Proven experience in instructional design and facilitation, with a focus on managing instructional design projects and teams.
- Proven record of building innovative and effective learning experiences at scale and beyond just point-and-click interactions.
- Strong knowledge of learning strategy, instructional design principles, adult learning theory, and learning technologies.
- Proficiency in using authoring tools, learning management systems (LMS), and multimedia software.
- Experience supporting several functional areas or clients across a variety of industries.
- Experience scaling learning for medium to large size global companies in a fast paced and demanding environment.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact frequently with a wide range of stakeholders; strong ability to manage expectations and customer demands.
What will give you a competitive edge:
- Advanced degree and/or industry certification in instructional design or equivalent.
- 5+ years of experience leading a learning and development team.
- Automotive industry experience.
