The Role:
The Plant Packaging Engineer's focus is to drive operational performance for Logistics, Manufacturing and Supply Chain. The Plant Packaging Engineer takes inputs from multiple stakeholders, understanding supply chain & manufacturing constraints to develop a robust packaging solution to support on site and outbound service part operations. This involves a high level of independent judgment, strategic vision, detailed analysis, technical understanding of manufacturing process, and outstanding communication skills. The Packaging Engineer will be the first point of contact for container flow and packaging issues.
What You Will Do:
- Support Program Launch:
- Coordinate and hold pre-concept container design reviews with plant core team members prior to General Motors Defense Container Buyoff Meetings.
- Attend all General Motors Defense Specialized Container Buyoff Meetings as the main plant representative responsible for accepting or declining proposed container designs.
- Interface with production operators and material coordinators to validate initial needs production intent containers and provide timely feedback to GMD team for specialized containers.
- Collaborate with GMD Packaging Program Lead to review all container system sizes.
- Develop In-House Container Fleet:
- Design and develop sequencing and in-process containers.
- Coordinate and conduct internal plant packaging engineer container buyoffs with Ergonomics, Production, Quality and Manufacturing.
- Procure and track delivery of in-house containers.
- Financial tracking for new projects.
- Maintain Packaging Plan For Every Part:
- Ensure all packaging plans are compliant and approved based on GMD1738 specifications.
- Maintain packaging within GMD Systems (i.e. MGO, PSAP) to ensure there is a documented Plan for Every Part.
- Resolve any container related discrepancies in GMD systems.
- Review and approve all supplier packaging change requests.
- Perform onsite packaging validation.
- Container Return and Issue Resolution:
- Develop and Coordinate a Container Return/Flow process for GM Defense.
- Investigate container shortages.
- Coordinate container repair, scrap, recycling, and re-use.
- Function as liaison between Assembly and GMD Central Office team for any container related issues.
- Improve Packaging and Implement Process:
- Investigate and help resolve expendable/returnable container issues within the plant.
- Perform productivity improvement reviews with Logistics and provide update to Material Lead.
- Analyze current packaging to identify potential improvements and collaborate with Manufacturing, Quality, Engineering, Part Supplier and Purchasing to implement.
- Cross functional development and compliance of Small Lot Packaging requirements.
- Develop process and issue SPPS (Supplier Practical Problem Solving) recovery to suppliers for non-compliant packaging issues.
- Assist GMD Supplier Quality Engineer in the investigation of packaging related quality issues/supplier complaints.
- Develop Processes and Procedures for Plant Packaging Engineer.
- Develop Outbound Service Packaging:
- Develop and maintain commercial packaging plans to support sustainment shipments.
- Support in Plant Sustainment team when packaging issues arise.
Additional Description
Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering or equivalent experience
- 5+ years of work experience in Packaging and/or Supply Chain management
- Ability to lead problem solving activities and manage project timelines.
- Capability to concurrently manage multiple cost savings operational improvement projects and initiatives.
- Ability to analyze basic financial data and identify cost drivers.
- Ability to work independently and in a collaborative cross functional team environment.
- Ability to effectively communicate
What Can Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications): :
- 5+ years of direct experience in Supply Chain Management and/or Manufacturing experience.
- Experience in low volume manufacturing
- Previous experience in Defense Industry and/or Government Contracting experience.
