VMEC, Vehicle Mechatronics Embedded Controls, is a production level group that supports the definition, design, and development of all embedded controllers that impact vehicle motion. Agile Scrum teams are constantly creating new and exciting control strategies, diagnostics, and communication methods to support all applications in the General Motors Portfolio. VMEC is seeking creative, highly motivated, agile problem solvers with passion and expertise in Diagnostics/Controls and great attention to detail.
The Role
The Diagnostics System Architect (DSA) is the Diagnostic Professional who is responsible for the overall alignment and quality of the diagnostic product for Electrification Propulsion Agile Release Train (ART) . This includes establishing the diagnostic strategy, overseeing the diagnostic design, ensuring diagnostic work is documented in EPIC/Features, establishing the diagnostic verification plan, interacting with partners such as Suppliers, DREs, SW, Service, Manufacturing, etc. The DSA is required to maintain their technical and regulatory currency and coach/inform their team members to ensure the diagnostic product achieve the quality needed to meet the vision of Flawless Diagnostics.

What You'll Do:
The selected candidate will lead the diagnostics systems development and architecture for the electrification propulsion using appropriate, common methods for VMEC feature development and support the growth capabilities to keep us at the forefront of emerging technology. Tasks and Responsibilities include:
- Product
- Assessing the level of effort required to perform diagnostic work on EPICs and Features
- Providing diagnostic perspectives on all EPICs and Features (NFRs, Acceptance Criteria, Definition of Done)
- Ensuring infrastructure is in place to enable assessment of the product's diagnostic quality and relentless improvement
- Systems Engineering
- Evaluate new concepts and designs prior to development
- Decompose new tech, develop DFMEA, identify diagnostic capabilities/needs, identify warranty parts, generate Diagnostic Object Specification of Intent, etc.
- Agile Team Interactions
- Develop and execute Diagnostic Architectural Runway, oversee diagnostic activities, be responsible for flawless diagnostic quality, manage PRTS, etc.
- Review diagnostic design, test plans and test results
- External Collaboration & Support
- Foster and promote inter-ART collaboration, support the DRE and the Calibration teams
- Interfacing with suppliers through supplier capability assessments and other interface documentation
- Provide supplier diagnostic oversight as needed
- Interact with service & manufacturing as needed
- Reviewing all relevant documentation to ensure quality is met by all partners
- Talent Development (Self and Others)
- Maintaining personal technical/regulatory currency and addressing ART capability gaps, etc.
Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications):
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical, Computer Science, Mechanical, or related engineering discipline
- Minimum 5+ years of Engineering experience related to diagnostics development and/or Embedded Controls development.
- Knowledge of major automotive subsystems and electrical/electronic circuit operation
- Knowledge and experience with major diagnostic deliverables such as Diagnostic monitors, diagnostic objects (including Data Identifiers (DIDs), Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and Routine Identifiers (RIDs), Diagnostic Event Managers, etc.
- In depth comprehension of industry diagnostic strategies and relevant standards including
- CARB regulatory requirements
- SAE J1979-x and Legislative requirements
- UDS (ISO-14229) diagnostic requirements
- AUTOSAR DCM and DEM interactions and configurations to enable proper definition of requirements
- ISO26262 safety requirements
- In depth understanding of Diagnostic over Ethernet (DoIP) mechanisms and required configurations as per AUTOSAR UDS
- In depth knowledge of DEXT and ODX templates and rules and how these files are used for Diagnostic Managers / DEM / DCM / FIM configurations in AUTOSAR
- Ability to coordinate and complete tasks per a cadence release schedule
- Ability to identify non-compliance to standards and resolve the issue
- High level of analytical ability where problems are unique and complex
- High level of interpersonal communication skills (written and oral)
- Able to work independently with high degree of initiative
- Familiarity with tools for virtual, HIL, and vehicle-based evaluation of diagnostics
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):
- MS or PhD in Engineering with focus on controls.
- 8+ years of Engineering experience related to diagnostics development
- Experience developing Diagnostic requirements, implementations, or service tools for Automotive electrical systems
- Experience developing Service procedures for automotive electrical systems
- Familiarity with GM Diagnostic protocol as described in GMW3110
- Experience using the following tools: Vector CANDela Studio, IBM Rational Change, IBM Rational Synergy, IBM Rational Rhapsody, IBM Rational DOORS, IBM Rational Team Concert
- Experience with Agile Product Development
- Knowledge of vehicle electrical systems
- Proven history of troubleshooting capability
- Knowledge of design, development and test engineering, manufacturing and assembly operations, engineering processes and procedures
