General Motors of Canada Company - Oshawa Assembly Plant , is inviting applications from Engineering Students for 1 Environmental Engineering Co-Op/Internship position.

This is an opportunity to jump-start your career by gaining valuable professional experience within a manufacturing environment. With the recent investment of over C$1 Billion into GM Oshawa to begin making pick-up trucks, the plant has ramped up to full production. The GM Oshawa truck manufacturing will play a key part in funding GM's all electric future. The intern will be assigned to support the Oshawa T1 truck manufacturing operations, and the Oshawa OEM Stamped Products and Service Operations (stamping, welding, and warehousing of aftermarket parts) for the entire duration of the 16 month internship program. The intern will also have the opportunity to engage with our environmental team at the Oshawa Canadian Technical Centre, and corporate environmental team, supporting General Motors sites across Canada.

The preferred candidate will be a self-motivated, confident engineering student with strong problem solving, interpersonal and communication skills. You will be required to work with minimal supervision and will be expected to continually improve the operation for their area. Also, you must have a valid unrestricted driver's licence.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate industrial process wastewater and stormwater programs to ensure compliance with local by-laws, and Ontario Ministry of Environment Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA)
  • Supervise industrial wastewater and stormwater management systems (wastewater discharge, detention ponds) sampling and 3rd party analytical program.
  • Support environmental compliance and initiatives related to plant operations including wastewater discharge, storm water management, air emissions, sewer systems, chemical usage, invoice validation, and waste management/recycling programs
  • Support Federal, Provincial and Regional environmental reporting such as National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI), Greenhouse Gas (GHG), Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) Temperature, and Regional Semi-Annual Wastewater Discharge
  • Support development, implementation, and continuous improvement of multiple ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems
  • Project Manager for various environmental engineering and facility projects as assigned
  • Develop and coordinate plant sustainability community outreach activities and environmental awareness programs (ex. Waste Reduction Week, Wildlife Habitat Certification WHC program)
  • Pursue new opportunities to increase environmental profile in the community and within General Motors network
  • Coordinate and support Zero Waste and Landfill Free plant waste management program initiatives and in compliance with applicable waste legislation
  • Conduct environmental inspections of various processes throughout the manufacturing plant including waste collection, storage tanks, and spill containment
  • Lead various continuous improvement special projects

Required Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of a Bachelor's degree (3rd and 4th year students) in one of the following areas: Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Science, Sustainable Chemistry
  • Enrolled in a qualifying Ontario co‑operative education, or internship program
  • Able to work fulltime, 40 hours per week in Canada, and 16-month term (4 consecutive semesters) starting May 2025
  • Willing to work in a plant environment
  • Have a valid Full Class G Ontario Driver's License, or equivalent Canadian out-of-province license
  • Outstanding leadership, interpersonal, and relationship management skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with varying levels of the organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to distill complex subjects to a wider audience
  • High level of integrity, ability to deal with ambiguity, takes initiative/self-directed
  • Possess strong organizational, problem-solving, and analytical skills

What will give you a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications):

  • Past experience in an industrial and/or manufacturing environment
  • Knowledge and understanding of ISO 14001 standard and environmental legislation
