The specialist role in the Material Mechanics and Durability organization is responsible for developing the understanding of novel materials and material systems through experimental design and execution. As a specialist you will plan, conduct and co-ordinate experiments to probe fundamental behavior of materials and subcomponent geometries. You will participate in development of state-of-the-art life prediction methods for fatigue, creep and fracture of advanced material systems. You will also support critical field issues through testing and analysis.

Job Description

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with Aerospace Research colleagues to identify and resolve technical challenges for high temperature testing of materials.
  • Safely operate and maintain mechanical testing equipment including MTS and Instron servo-hydraulic frames, pumps, data acquisition systems reactors, LASER and vacuum systems.
  • Troubleshoot and oversee the repair of equipment
  • Be responsible for responding to system alarms, including after hours as needed
  • Be responsible for tracking and ordering supplies and consumables
  • Work with trades and other equipment specialists
  • Invent and patent when appropriate
  • Collaborate with Aerospace design communities in the development of test methods, stress analysis and lifing methods for Ceramic Matrix Composites, barrier coatings and superalloys.
  • Deliver effective presentations, reports and publications to engineering staff, GE Aerospace and external agencies.

Required Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Experience with mechanical and thermal testing of materials
  • Ability to troubleshoot test equipment
  • Understanding of instrumentation, data acquisition systems, fixtures and test procedures
  • Experience with mechanical equipment such as compressors, blowers, pumps.
  • Ability to adapt to new processes
  • Ability to work with diverse, high-paced teams
  • Willing to work government funded programs
  • Mature attitude and deep understanding of lab safety protocols
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals, now or in the future, for this job opening
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY.

Desired Qualifications

  • Familiarity with infrared cameras
  • Familiarity with LASER systems
  • Experience with computational modeling tools such as NX, ANSYS, Hypermesh etc.
  • Familiarity with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python and VBA
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

The base pay range for this position is 60,000 - 110,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary. This posting is expected to close on May 01, 2025
